Mother defends breastfeeding baby while driving
Reported by Vic Gideon
POSTED: Monday, June 16, 2003 5:06:15 PM
UPDATED: Tuesday, June 17, 2003 12:20:52 PMPORTAGE COUNTY -- A mother traveling from Detroit to Pittsburgh got into trouble in Portage County while trying to drive and breastfeed her baby at the same time.
Twenty-nine-year-old Catherine Donkers had fed the baby before she left Detroit but said her seven-month-old daughter was hungry again.
"I knew I was doing nothing wrong when I was breastfeeding her," Donkers said.
Donkers doesn't consider her actions excessively dangerous.
"I think there are lots of things we do when we put ourselves at risk, just by the very fact that I'm in a car and there's lots of car accidents every single day," she said. "I think it would be reasonable to say even that's a danger."
A truck driver apparently saw it as a danger and called the highway patrol. But Donkers wouldn't pull over for police until she got to a tollbooth.
"I've directed her to, that when she doesn't feel safe, she goes to a public place," said her husband, Brad Barnhill.
At the tollbooth, Donkers didn't give the trooper a driver's license. She instead pulled out an affidavit as identification and got cited for not having a license.
The couple also claims she did nothing wrong, saying Michigan law has an exemption to its child restraint law for nursing mothers.
They claim that since the turnpike is an interstate, drivers can follow the laws of their home state. But the highway patrol says that as long as the stop occurred in Ohio, they have to abide by Ohio laws.
The couple has done extensive research on the law and believes in a strict adherence to them. Donkers is facing child endangering and child seat violations among other charges. Her and her husband say they plan to fight all charges and will file a counter suit.

also, although I think folks SHOULD wear safety belts... and I always have, wihtout exception. I always thought that making it mandatory was a bunch of nany state bs.. just like the helmet laws.
Wonder how much she would sue the auto manufacturer for if she had a collision during the act and the driver airbag then turned her infant into raspberry jam? Had she researched that too?

the instructions for the car specifically state that if you are going to breastfeed while driving you MUST disengage the air bag.

You are under the misimpression that I am a United States citizen or United States resident, or have a source of income from within the United States. I do not.
If you take the time to read the Internal Revenue Code as I have, and if your legal counsel is worth its retainer, they can tell you that United States as defined in the I.R.C. means Washington, DC, its trust territories or possessions. I was not born in any of these places, so I am "alien" with regard to the United States.
I have never lived in any of these places, so I am also "non-resident" with regard to the United States. To my knowledge, I am not a federal government employee, so my source of pay from Lexis-Nexis is considered "without" the United States as well.
My proper status is natural born Sovereign Citizen of the Republic of Kansas, inhabiting the Commonwealth of Virginia. Being a non-resident alien with respect to the United States, and given that I have no corporate net income, I am exempt from both filing and paying federal and state income taxes.
Please do not think of me as a "tax protester", as I do not protest the I.R.C. I have simply done enough research on the matter to convince myself that I am proceeding lawfully.
The above text was taken right out of one of his web pages. What a unique individual. Brother it takes all kinds.
"convinced" himself that he is "proceeding lawfully." What a riot! ...and so it goes.

The stop didn't occur until she exited at the 187th and then became caught up in the toll booth and that's where the officer was able to approach the car and talk to the driver," 187th? That's too close to me, for my comfort.
Heck, women driving while putting on make up make me nervous enough....

the instructions for the car specifically state that if you are going to breastfeed while driving you MUST disengage the steering wheel and driver side air bag.Actually, they don't. So she'd have a case in our whacked-out legal system, because she doesn't have the good sense God gave a crabapple.
It's why hair curlers are marked "FOR EXTERNAL USE ONLY" these days. (Don't ask, don't tell, don't investigate.)

Good grief! Do you think this will be enough for everybody???
1. Get a five foot sheet of aluminum foil (standard one foot wide Reynolds Wrap brand will do nicely.)
2. Fold the sheet four times into five equal segments so that you end up with a 1x1 foot square, making sure that you fold over the dull side of the foil leaving the square shiny on both sides.
3. Use scissors to cut from one corner of the square to the center, making a straight line.
4. Bend the foil from one side of the cut under the other, making a slight cone. Again, make sure that the outside of the cone has a shiny side of the foil; this is VERY important.
5. Place the cone on your head and squash the top and sides to make it fit snugly.
6. Apply Scotch tape liberally making sure to secure the cut in the foil and any form-fitting creases made in step 5.
7. Use more tape to secure AFDB to your cranium.
A Note About The Shiny Side:
It can't be stressed enough how important it is to have the shiny side pointing out. This is needed because the shiny side is most reflective to psychotronic radiation, while the dull side can actually, in certain environmental conditions, absorb it. However, as is illustrated in the instructions above, it is also wise to complement this with a layer of foil pointing shiny side in. This will keep your brain waves, which are also reflected by the shiny side, from being picked up by mind-reading equipment. There is a small number of aluminum foil researchers who believe that this may cause an alpha-wave harmonic to build up in the skull resulting in memory loss or pseudo-religious visions, but their findings have never been replicated by the aluminum foil research community at large. Even if their findings are validated, the risk involved is small compared to the potential of mind-intrusion.

An SSAN is required only for DIRECT payment of benefits.
The roads are provided for by gasoline taxes, and I pay those, thank you very much. You may be interested to know that the Ohio Turnpike is totally funded by its tolls and receives no funds.
Public accomodations are not paid for by income taxes,
they are paid for at point of purchase as are all excises.
