It's up to you to find a constitutional authority for government to tell a woman what to do with her womb. Oh, you're talking about a law banning hysterectomies?
To: gcruse
Once the individual is sentient. Why isn't that a religious view?

Check out the silent scream video and see if that illustrates sentience, please. If you don't I'll have to assume you're afraid and cannot bear to have real facts to bolster your argument.
From what I remember, it's pretty clinical and documentary in style.

I focus on the sentience of the fetus. Define that for me, please.

I posted a thread back when written about "Brainwaves" by Greg Easterbrook on the issue. Easterbrook is food for the brain on the nexus of science and controversial public policy. Seek him out. He is consistently stimulating and substantive. Of course it won't change you mind. That is because brain waves don't matter to you perhaps. And I respect that. This issue is all about a priori assumptions. There is no right or wrong answer. That is why the public square must have its way.

They on the other hand never once have cared they killed a grandchild. When I got pregnant with my second child, my mother tried to pressure me to kill the baby by abortion. I had to forcibly escort my mother from my apartment and didn't see again until my baby was born. I didn't want my unborn baby to be around someone who wanted her dead. It was a very sad situation, which later on no one remembered. Except me.

That's religious? It's a principle. It comes from somewhere.

Maybe I can find a reel of coathanger abortions
for you to watch to make sure you get the other
side, too, but probably not.

I believe that the only legitimate function of government is to protect the inalienable rights of humans. The most important right is the right to life. If any other human acts to kill when there is no threat to his or her life, the killer must be stopped or punished or the government is an illegitimate government.
Our government is dangerously close to losing its legitimacy when the law is used to protect and aide the killer (abortionist and the woman who seeks an abortion) rather than prohibiting the killing and punishing the killer.

Principles need not derive from God. Maybe oppostion to abortion isn't based on religion. If you belived that the unborn child was sentient would you oppose abortion?

Once people taste the nectar of control over other's lives, they can't be talked back down. And what greater control over somone's life can there be than taking it away from someone who is entirely helpess? That's why a lot of abortion proponents call it "popluation control" -Duh!
To: hocndoc
I understand what you're saying. I think government is legitimate when it defends our rights, and the choice of a woman to carry pregnancy to term is her right.

As I said, I think partial birth abortion is murder.
But there is no sentient being, IMO, in the first trimester.

Forcing women to take unwanted pregnancies to term doesn't faze you a bit, does it? And of course all these women had sex involuntarily, or hadn't had it explained to them where babies come from. And don't say anything about rape, we all know 1% or less of abortions are from rape.

It depends on your definition of person, I guess.
