Conservatives (Rush & Sean) in ads? It's not right (Whiney Liberal Alert)
The Star Ledger ^ | 6/17/03 | Paul Mulshine

I took my daughter to a double- header at the local minor- league park on Father's Day. The first game was good, but we left before the second one. I couldn't take the commercials. Every time the pitcher stopped to scratch himself, the loudspeakers would take advantage of the lull by blaring out an invitation for me to eat something, drink something or sue somebody.

Exactly, What the hell is this guy talking about? I really like to know where this "most solidly Republican town" is.

I guess if this moron thinks he is a conservative then the town he is probably talking about is probably Greenwich Village

But did I miss something, Are they passing smoking bans I don't know about is "Solidly" Republican states like Virginia or South Carolina?

I don't know about is "Solidly" = I don't know about in "Solidly"

The difference is that "journalists" claim to be impartial when they are not. Rush freely admits that he is not impartial. Therefore I have an accurate lens to view Rush's comments through. I do not have the same luxury of the "journalist".

Mulshine is actually very Conservative. People here on Free Republic are great, but too many of us are jumping to conclusions about Mulshine based on this article.

I don't really agree with Mulshine on this subject but I have read enough of his work over the years to know his slant..and it ain't left. He has pretty decent Conservative credentials and many of his columns are very good reads and thought provoking.

Have we sunk so low that now we immediately label someone a "whiney liberal" because they think Rush and Sean are a bit hypocritical ? That rigidity of thought sounds more like a liberal concept than a Conservative one to me.

Mulshine is actually very Conservative. People here on Free Republic are great, but too many of us are jumping to conclusions about Mulshine based on this article.

He blast the Free Enterprise system, Private Property rights and SUVs in this article and we are suppose to believe he is a fellow Conservative.

Also repeat

His past recent columns include
» Whitman's wasted opportunity (She couldn't make the Repubs more moderate)
» Rick's (Santorium) views on rights are best kept private
» The right should back local filters on smoking
» Hating the French is a waste of time
» Smoke-free bars? I'll drink to that

Actually recently every column he writes recently is either why he thinks NJ should ban smoking on private property like New York or he finds a way to mention smoking bans in whatever subject he is talking about.

It's Ban smoking, Ban smoking, Ban smoking over and over with this idiot.

I don't really agree with Mulshine on this subject but I have read enough of his work over the years to know his slant..and it ain't left. He has pretty decent Conservative credentials and many of his columns are very good reads and thought provoking.

Really?? I have been reading his columns for awhile and I have yet to see anything remotely conservative about him. Yes occasionly he writes ABOUT the NJ Republican party but never supporting Republican core issues. This is actually the first time I seen him ID himself as a Conservative all of his past articles when writing about Conservatives/Republicans he refers to them in the Third person.

"When I wrote recently in favor of banning smoking in bars, the president of a Republican club in one of the most solidly Republican towns on the planet told me he agreed with me. I don't even know many Republicans who smoke cigarettes anymore. "

It has nothing to do with being pro or anti tobacco. I've hated the smell of cigarettes ever since I quit smoking, and my wife is severely allergic to smoke, but it's not the government's place to tell a private business (a bar) which (otherwise legal) activities must be prohibited. If the author and his "republican club" buddy think this is the proper role for government, they may be republicans but they're not conservatives.

"Proof that male PMS exists?"

Only in this case the "P" stands for permanent.

Check out the ACU ratings of its Congressman. One of the most solidly conservative voting records of any state. Even Democrat Virgil Goode has a rating over 90, I believe.

I wouldn't take anything this guy writes seriously. Someone wrote that he isn't conservative, he's a contrarian. Sounds dead on to me. A pretentious, know it all that ironically knows very little.

I like the main point is that Conservatives criticizing the New York Times for "selling out." (They New York Times used to be so cool, man, now they like totally sold out)

I don't want to know whether this guy calls himself a conservative or a liberal, I want to know if this guy is 15 years old.

I've been reading his columns for years. His views on taxes, terrorism, national defense and a whole host of other issues generally are very Conservative. Just because he doesn't believe developers should be allowed to pave every square inch of New Jersey or that he hates SUV's (I disagree with him there) doesn't make the guy a whiney liberal.

Mulshine brings a decent perspective to the debate. Is he wrong alot ? Of course but he does raise interesting and provacative questions. Personally, I don't think you or I are qualified to determine exactly what constitues making someone a true Conservative or not. Last time I checked there was no cookie cutter definition of such. I look at someone like Sean Hannity and can't help but feel that if he is what is now considered a "model" Conservative, then we are in big trouble.

I have been reading him for a while off and on for about 3 years and a lot lately since permanately moving here and I don't see it. (BTW I would buy the Times before I would buy the ultra left Star Ledger, I get it leftover in the lunchroom at work) I guess every once in awhile he puts out a piece that is as far right as the Arlen Specter/John McCain level but that's about it. If he was ever Conservative than it's apparent that he is on his way to becoming New Jersey's version of Ariana Huffington.

Just because he doesn't believe developers should be allowed to pave every square inch of New Jersey or that he hates SUV's (I disagree with him there) doesn't make the guy a whiney liberal.

Come on now, This whole piece was one big whine fest. Gee a radio host making money by endorsing products! What a freaking relevation there Paul!! And why does he single out Conservative host like Rush? Why not mention any number of Liberal host in the Tri State Area? I am sure the only respectable host to him are on NPR. He sounds like a little child jealous of the sucess of others.

And it's not just this column, I am sure you are well aware that all this guy can write about recently is how NJ should ban smoking, how much he hates smoking, Smoking is Evil, I don't care if 1000 bars go out of buisness as long as I can drink my White Zinfandels without inhaling smoke, etc., etc.

Mulshine brings a decent perspective to the debate. Is he wrong alot ? Of course but he does raise interesting and provacative questions.

What would that decent perspective be with this article? Maybe Rush & Sean should give up all advertising and just do telathones like PBS.

Personally, I don't think you or I are qualified to determine exactly what constitues making someone a true Conservative or not. Last time I checked there was no cookie cutter definition of such.

I agree and I am glad and think it's a good thing that all conservatives don't agree with each other in lock step on every issue. However while I can't give a definition of a Conservative when deciding if one is a Conservative I can do what the Supreme Court said when defining Porn, I know it when I see it, And with this Whiney Liberal I don't see it

I look at someone like Sean Hannity and can't help but feel that if he is what is now considered a "model" Conservative, then we are in big trouble.

Well again, There probably isn't a person who fits the perfect model or definition of a conservative to every other conservative and yes Sean Hannity has his faults but if you are comparing this guy to Sean Hannity then I give up!
