I remember not too long ago when a friend of mine lost his father to cancer, he talked of his only consolation being that at least his dad and mom would be together.

But it's what he said next that stuck with me. "Neil, it's just me and my sisters. There's no one in front of us now."

Thank you for the ping. At 57, I can empathize with Neil. I have a son, daughter-in-law, and granddaughter whom I see too seldom (distance between households), and my blessed Mother is going downhill fast. My father is dead. I have but one of two brothers left ... and I'm the youngest. My grandparents are many years now passed away. It is about time, but it is also about family continuum. Sad that so many have been cut off from being a part of that continuum, upon the altar of 'choice'.

I changed my mind about the direction of my life after 9/11. I decided that I didn't like where I was, what I was doing and have set out on a path to make my life what I want. I'm not like some people who can just walk out on what they are doing. I needed to make the change as I could change certain things in my life: my business, my house, etc. The final phase should start soon, as I sell my house to move to another state.

I just hope I have the time I need to make the changes that are left.

I know the feeling that Cavuto is describing. There is no one "ahead of me" in my parents' generation. There is also no one ahead of me in MY generation. There is no comfort in that situation, except in the country music classic that made the top 100 at number 36, "Will the Circle be Unbroken (Bye and Bye, Lord, Bye and Bye)."

OH Neil Neil Neil! NO!! No one is forgetting! People are re-discovering the classics in a big way.

I am a HUGE Cary Grant fan- and there is a VERY big following of his out there and the fans are getting younger and younger. Quite a few of the newer fans that have been joining our club (see my profile) are UNDER 20!!! I am also finding this with Sinatra (hi Stonecold!!)---a lot of the newest fans are very young and we're all practically in mourning because we didn't get to see these guys when they were alive. I know we all hate Ted Turner around here, but TCM is about the greatest channel ever. They are not just about celebrating classic movies, but also about preservation and spreading the word. It's great.

Your statement about TCM and Turner ... I agree with completely. I REALLY enjoy seeing some of those movies again, and some I did not see when younger.
After a previous post of yours, I did a little research on Cary Grant ... for I have also always been a fan, but knew little about him. Grant was amazing ..... surviving what he went through as a child, etc., etc. ... and a shrewd business head as well.
He was NOT just a handsome and classy man ........

LOL...I remember one morning after my then 18 year old daughter watched Arsenic and Old Lace on TCM...she came to me and asked..."So...who is this Cary Grant person?" She is quite a fan of his AND Frank Sinatra...bigtime.

Because of TT..before watching a movie on TCM I ask for forgiveness...LOL

Something tells me that generations to come will still be watching Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart, instead of Ben Affleck and Alec Baldwin. Tom Hanks will probably be remembered, but very few of the "young guns" of today will survive, IMO.

Patricia- Cary Grant was a remarkable person- and a Republican. ;-D Check out my profile for more about him (it't about half dedicated to him! LOL!)- you should come and join our Email Warbrides club for Grant fans. They are a great group of people as well as CG aficianadoes. And I am very proud my post made you read up a little more about him. ;-)

Lysie- A&OL is a GREAT movie-which actually I didn't like at first until I watched it with mtngrl-(another Freeper Fan of Cary's) and we both were almost in tears laughing so hard. Cary never liked the film b/c he thought he was overacting, but for us fans it's one of our favorites. Not only because he is SO funny in it, but also because it's so against type for him. His early stuff is SO funny and great-- much different than his later works where he has completed his persona of suave leading man. And A&OL has such a great supporting cast- I love Peter Lorre in it as well. His early works are hilarious. Check out The Awful Truth or My Favorite Wife. ROFLOL! TOO funny. You both should come and join the warbrides as well!!!!

BTW- Gregory Peck was Cary's best friend--I hate it that we've lost another link to classic Hollywood and Cary himself.

I understand completely what Neil is saying, even more so than Neil as I am older that he is. At the same time I do know that some of the classics will carry on for a very long time. I have a soldier I have adopted who is is Iraq. I mentioned to him that I'm a western movie fan. I got a note from him saying that he is a great John Wayne fan, as I am. The Duke died in 1979 and Matthew is only 20. Lawgirl, you are right on.............

Cary Grant was indeed a fabulous actor, imo. He acted in a wide variety of movies ranging from slapstick comedies to dramas, and there were even four Hitchcocks in the mix. I have my favorites in each category but would heartily recommend Charade, People Will Talk, or The Talk of the Town for someone who enjoys a serious movie. If you prefer something lighter, I would suggest Bringing Up Baby or The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer as well as those mentioned by Lawgirl. There is a wide range of movies inbetween these two extremes and would encourage you to watch such films as Holiday or Father Goose if you are interested in an all around good movie. You just can't go wrong picking up almost any Cary Grant movie and playing it. You are almost assured of liking it. He picked his roles well.
