I recently saw a Canadian documentary on the Iranian Hostage Crisis and several of the hostages interviewed mentioned one of their own collaborating with the militant students (i.e. selling out the CIA operative, giving up info on the Marines, etc.). This was mentioned in the book "444 Days" which I read too long ago for my feeble brain to remember. Can anyone provide any further info? Details?? TIA.
Army Col. Charles W. Scott said he was tortured for days by the Iranians because "immediately after the takeover Subic accompanied his captors, introducing each hostage and identifying areas of expertise each had"; and specifically that Scott spoke Farsi and had a long career in Iran.
Another ex-hostage, Col. Leland Holland, says that Subic also revealed to the Iranians the secret tapping code that the hostages were using to communicate with each other while they were kept in separate rooms. (UPI, 1/20/85)
The Army also noted that Subic had appeared on a film made by the Iranians in which he criticized US policy in Iran. (AP, 11/4/89).
In 1989, Subic was a law enforcement office with the Florida State Dept of Agriculture.
Shortly after being returned to the US, the Pentagon reported that administrative action against Subic was being considered -- ranging from a reprimand to denial of re-enlistment; I do not know if anything was actually done.
Hi all. I know this post is rather old but I have been doing a search on Joe Subic for the last couple of months. Please ask why? Because I worked with him in Iraq over the last few months. He bragged all the time about being a prisoner of war in Iran and so on and so forth. It was just recently I found out what a scumbag this guy really was. I actually realized it while working with him but things are really coming to light now.
He is now an Army Reserve Sergeant First Class (E-7) and in the civilian life he is the Chief of Police in White Springs, FL. I mean it folks, the guy is a total scumbag.
He was awarded the Bronze Star behind closed doors just before I left Iraq. never shot a bullet, dodged a bullet or got close enough to the enemy to deserve even a letter of comendation. I guess he had a lot of people fooled.
If anyone has any more on this guy, I would love to see it.
I know that these are not recent posts, but I would still like to see if anyone has any more info on this man. I heard recently that there is a Canadian film somewhere showing this man pointing out our Soldiers, stating their jobs and encouraging the enemy to shoot them, which he did on this film while Joe Subic watched. I happen to be a resident of the county in which this slime ball is a Chief of Police in one of the towns, he is at this very moment in the FBI Academy in Quantico and is trying to become Chief of Police in our county seat. I am outraged and cannot understand why someone would hire him to wash their dog, much less "Serve and Protect" our citizens.
If anyone has information (other than '444 Days')-that I could get my hands on, I would love to turn it over to the press. He needs to be stopped. Thanks for any and all assistance!

I would like to do what ever it takes to help make sure this guy is NOT elected to any seat in any state.
I should have directed my post to you too...
I worked with Subic from 2000-2001 when he was in the FLARNG at Camp Blanding, Florida with 3/20th SFG - Support Company. He came there and replaced me as the CI NCOIC. Curious to know what job or position he held in Iraq recnetly? I heard rumors of his involvement in the Iran Hostage Crisis more comonly known as "444 days" and came to know there were people in my national guard unit who didnt want him there because of his "alleged involvement or alleged turncoat activities" while a hostage in Iran back in 1979. I know a couple of high ranking retired Col.'s wanted his ass strung up for his actions as a young E-6 in Iran where his MOS was that of a pencil pusher. He was a desk jockey in Iran. What did he do in Iraq and how long was he over there for. Was he a member of SF Support Company still? If anyone is still interested in this post get Mark Bowdens book "Guests of the Ayatollah" and read it. Great book, very informative and it gives a pretty accurate detailed account of Subic and his actions. I personally had no problems with the guy except that he had no CI experience and had never been trained as a CI guy when he took my place as NCOIC of the CI section (small as it was). Good luck to all of you in your search. I will be following this post since recently reading Bowden's book.

"There is a sequel to the Subic story that Mr. Bowden missed. At a reunion some years after the hostage release, one of the freed State Department officers sat at a table with Gen. Edward C. "Slick" Meyer, Army chief of staff during the crisis, and writer Wells. Talk got around to Mr. Subic, and Gen. Meyer related that he had wanted to put him before a court martial for his conduct. But "orders from the top," which Gen. Meyer interpreted as meaning President Reagan, were to let the matter drop.

I was wondering of Bowden uncovered this.
By the way Five-O. Our paths have crossed twice now. :) On this topic at least.
Hey, I just E-mailed him,Lets all E-Mail Him
He doesn't need to hear from me.
"Chubby and blond, Subic had been working as a clerk at the embassy and began making himself useful to the Iranians on the day of the takeover, leading them around the compound and identifying his bound, blindfolded colleagues by name and job description. Since then he had been allowed special privileges: a telephone, warm clothing, a steady supply of snack foods from the embassy commissary. In return he had helped with things like the Christmas decorations. Hermening had been made Subic's roommate, and Subic had helped convert the young Marine into a more pliable prisoner. "
