ALBANY - Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver's chief counsel was arrested in his state office on rape charges yesterday - possibly involving the use of a date-rape drug - and led away in handcuffs as stunned officials looked on.

Libertylover, back when date rape meant "I felt pressured," or "I was tipsy and now I regret it," I would have agreed with your skepticism. But what people use the term for nowadays is slipping someone a mickey and "using" the victim while that person is semi- or unconscious. That's clearly rape in my book, and if residue of certain drugs can be found and a physical exam proves intercourse, the accusation is credible and the offense is serious.
