36 Phony Congressional "Supporters" of the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban (VANITY)
Free Republic ^ | 6/5/03 | AuH2ORepublican

Posted on 06/05/2003 4:01:40 PM PDT by AuH2ORepublican

As you all know, the House of Representatives approved by an overwhelming margin a ban on partial-birth abortions last night. However, many of the Congressmen who will claim to have supported the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban proved not to be truly opposed to this barbaric procedure, since minutes earlier they had voted in favor of a substitute bill by Jim Greenwood (RINO-PA)that purported to ban all late-term abortions but in reality would have created an exception to the ban large enough to drive a Mack Truck through (it would have allowed late-term abortions whenever the mother's "health"---including mental health---could be affected). So keep when you hear Harold Ford, Chris Shays, Sherwood Boehlert or Patrick Kennedy claim that they voted to ban partial-birth abortions, remember than in the vote that mattered they voted with the pro-aborts.

These are the 245 principled U.S. Representatives (206 Republicans and 39 Democrats) who voted AGAINST Jim Greenwood's sham substitute amendment and then voted FOR the real Partial Birth Abortion Ban:

Aderholt (R-AL) Akin (R-MO) Alexander (D-LA) Bachus (R-AL) Baker (R-LA) Ballenger (R-NC) Barrett (R-SC) Bartlett (R-MD) Barton (R-TX) Beauprez (R-CO) Bereuter (R-NE) Berry (D-AR) Bilirakis (R-FL) Bishop (D-GA) Bishop (R-UT) Blackburn (R-TN) Blunt (R-MO) Boehner (R-OH) Bonilla (R-TX) Bonner (R-AL) Bono (R-CA) Boozman (R-AR) Boswell (D-IA) Boyd (D-FL) Bradley (R-NH) Brady (R-TX) Brown (R-SC) Brown-Waite (R-FL) Burgess (R-TX) Burns (R-GA) Burr (R-NC) Buyer (R-IN) Calvert (R-CA) Camp (R-MI) Cannon (R-UT) Cantor (R-VA) Capito (R-WV) Carter (R-TX) Chabot (R-OH) Chocola (R-IN) Coble (R-NC) Cole (R-OK) Collins (R-GA) Costello (D-IL) Cox (R-CA) Cramer (D-AL) Crane (R-IL) Crenshaw (R-FL) Cubin (R-WY) Culberson (R-TX) Cunningham (R-CA) Davis (D-TN) Davis, Jo Ann (R-VA) Davis, Tom (R-VA) Deal (R-GA) DeLay (R-TX) DeMint (R-SC) Diaz-Balart, Lincoln (R-FL) Diaz-Balart, Mario (R-FL) Doolittle (R-CA) Doyle (D-PA) Dreier (R-CA) Duncan (R-TN) Dunn (R-WA) Ehlers (R-MI) Emerson (R-MO) English (R-PA) Everett (R-AL) Feeney (R-FL) Ferguson (R-NJ) Flake (R-AZ) Fletcher (R-KY) Foley (R-FL) Forbes (R-VA) Fossella (R-NY) Franks (R-AZ) Gallegly (R-CA) Garrett (R-NJ) Gerlach (R-PA) Gibbons (R-NV) Gillmor (R-PA) Gingrey (R-GA) Goode (R-VA) Goodlatte (R-VA) Goss (R-FL) Granger (R-TX) Graves (R-MO) Green (R-WI) Gutnecht (R-MN) Hall (D-TX) Harris (R-FL) Hart (R-PA) Hastert (R-IL) Hastings (R-WA) Hayes (R-NC) Hayworth (R-AZ) Hefley (R-CO) Hensarling (R-TX) Herger (R-CA) Hinojosa (D-TX) Hobson (R-OH) Hoekstra (R-MI) Holden (D-PA) Hostettler (R-IN) Hulshof (R-MO) Hunter (R-CA) Hyde (R-IL) Isakson (R-GA) Issa (R-CA) Istook (R-OK) Janklow (R-SD) Jefferson (D-LA) Jenkins (R-TN) John (D-LA) Johnson (R-IL) Johnson, Sam (R-TX) Jones (R-NC) Kanjorski (D-PA) Kaptur (D-OH) Keller (R-FL) Kennedy (R-MN) Kildee (D-MI) King (R-IA) King (R-NY) Kingston (R-GA) Kline (R-MN) Knollenberg (R-MI) LaHood (R-IL) Lampson (D-TX) Langevin (D-RI) Latham (R-IA) LaTourette (R-OH) Lewis (R-CA) Linder (R-GA) Lipinski (D-IL) LoBiondo (R-NY) Lucas (D-KY) Lucas (R-OK) Manzullo (R-IL) Marshall (D-GA) Matheson (D-UT) McCotter (R-MI) McCrery (R-LA) McHugh (R-NY) McInnis (R-CO) McIntyre (D-NC) McKeon (R-CA) McNulty (D-NY) Mica (R-FL) Miller (R-FL) Miller (R-MI) Miller, Gary (R-CA) Mollohan (D-WV) Moran (R-KS) Murphy (R-PA) Murtha (D-PA) Musgrave (R-CO) Myrick (R-NC) Nethercutt (R-WA) Ney (R-OH) Northup (R-KY) Norwood (R-GA) Nunes (R-CA) Nussle (R-IA) Oberstar (D-MN) Ortiz (D-TX) Osborne (R-NE) Otter (R-ID) Oxley (R-OH) Paul (R-TX) Pearce (R-NM) Pence (R-IN) Peterson (D-MN) Peterson (R-PA) Petri (R-WI) Pickering (R-MS) Pitts (R-PA) Platts (R-PA) Pombo (R-CA) Pomeroy (D-ND) Porter (R-NV) Portman (R-OH) Pryce (R-OH) Putnam (R-FL) Quinn (R-NY) Radanovich (R-CA) Rahall (D-WV) Regula (R-OH) Rehberg (R-MT) Renzi (R-AZ) Reynolds (R-NY) Rogers (R-AL) Rogers (R-KY) Rogers (R-MI) Rohrbacher (R-CA) Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL) Ross (D-AR) Royce (R-CA) Ryan (D-OH) Ryun (R-KA) Saxton (R-NJ) Schrock (R-VA) Sensenbrenner (R-WI) Sessions (R-TX) Shadegg (R-AZ) Shaw (R-FL) Sherwood (R-PA) Shimkus (R-IL) Shuster (R-PA) Simpson (R-ID) Skelton (D-MO) Smith (R-MI) Smith (R-NJ) Smith (R-TX) Souder (R-IN) Stearns (R-FL) Stenholm (D-TX) Stupak (D-MI) Sullivan (R-OK) Tancredo (R-CO) Tanner (D-TN) Tauzin (R-LA) Taylor (D-MS) Taylor (R-NC) Terry (R-NE) Thornberry (R-TX) Tiahrt (R-KA) Tiberi (R-OH) Toomey (R-PA) Turner (R-OH) Upton (R-MI) Vitter (R-LA) Walden (R-OR) Walsh (R-NY) Wamp (R-TN) Weldon (R-FL) Weldon (R-PA) Weller (R-IL) Whitfield (R-KY) Wicker (R-MS) Wilson (R-NM) Wilson (R-SC) Wolf (R-VA) Young (R-AK) Young (R-FL)

And then there are the losers who voted for neither. That would be my Rep. Moore (D-KS). He's a "moderate" doncha know. Only, I don't know what the heck he's moderate about. I don't call or write because he wouldn't listen. I just consider Tiahrt (my old Rep) as my guy.

A better question is, why haven't we been able to beat him yet? He represents a district where Bush got 53% in 2000, and will probably get 60% in 2004, yet Moore keeps winning with 52%. In 2002 a pro-choice Republican named Adam Taff ran, and he says he'll run again in 2004. But I believe a pro-life female candidate was also interested. Maybe she will finally be able to send Moore packing.

It would also be interesting to see who the Reps and Senators are who voted for the ban when they knew Clinton would veto it, but who vote against it knowing Bush will sign it.

Because moderate republicans around her loathe conservative republicans more than they dislike liberal democrats. To some degree (not me, for the most part) conservatives return the sentiment. Therefore, over anyone's dead Republican body will they allow a Republican of slightly different social issue stripes to get elected -- even if that means we get a liberal democrat. I kid you not. I cannot even defend my own on this. I've actually heard them say that Moore was better than Taff (the moderate who barely won the primary). Taff would have voted for the PBA ban. I don't see how Moore is better.

I have to say though, that I understand it on a certain level. Some issues just kill the vote. As long as they don't VOTE for Moore, they should vote according to their conscience. I could compromise on this issue but their are issues I can't compromise on (and won't, so who am I to say?). Sad as it is in this case, the world isn't better full of people who value winning over everything else. That's the mindset that gave us Bill Clinton. At some point, you have to take a principled stand. Every great person throughout history was a principled person. Trouble is, so was every tyrant. Back when wisdom and ethics were valued, principles were a safe thing to invest in.

So here we are, giving you Dennis Moore. I don't know what the answer is. I can say that the media around here is as bad as it gets. They are HORRIBLY unfair and biased. As long as we cannot get our message out, we will keep losing.

Taff favored late term restrictions. I believe he would have supported this bill.

"Taff favored late term restrictions. I believe he would have supported this bill."

Even if he didn't, he'd still be better than Moore because (i) he is more conservative than Moore in every other issue and (ii) he would vote for a Republican Speaker, and if the RATs controlled the House the PBA ban wouldn't even come up for a vote.

I hate RINOs, but they're a million times better than RATs.

Clinton vetoed it on Oct. 10, 1997 so that would be the 105th Congress, first session.... He vetoed another version the year prior I think which would be the 104th Congress second session...

Go to Thomas Locator and you can dig around and find the final votes I'd guess if you are interested.

Thanks; I understand. I am probably like you, conservative, willing to vote for certain RINOs. I understand the need to not compromise. Here is how Moore could be better than a liberal Republican. Incumbents are tough to beat. Get a liberal Republican in there, and he's in there for a while. A lib Repub and a mod Dem will vote the same basically, liberal. So the tradeoff is a few more terms with a moderate Dem and finally you might get a conserv Repub.

read my post #14. If the House is certain to stay Repub, or the Senate for that matter, I would feel more free to vote ideology.

Taff was a better RINO than most. That's the sad part. He was great about taxes and at least a true moderate on abortion, but he was against vouchers which is irresponsible. He was definitely better than Taff. I can't say that about all RINOs. Yeah, there's the speaker thing, but we aren't close enough for that to be an issue at this point.

You know, it's a balancing act because you can sell everything you believe in down the river in the interest of "winning." I guess I can compromise on abortion easier because we have NOTHING. So, anything is better than nothing. I refuse to compromise on the gay agenda because it's the other way around. We stand to lose everything. But if they win the constitutional right to sodomy it's all over anyway. Lock your children up.

"I heard Dick Gephardt didn't vote at all, do you know if that is true ?"

Absolutely true. And while Gephardt has missed something like 85% of the votes since he announced for president, I have a feeling that his absence today was intentional. He has voted for the PBA ban in previous years, and this time around he'd get screwed regardless of how he voted (if he voted for the ban, he'd get killed in the primaries, and if he voted against it, he'd have trouble in Midwestern states in the general). The other presidential contender in the House, Dennis Kucinich, voted against the PBA ban *and even against the sham ban* even though he had a 100% pro-life record until the day he announced for president. Talk about an unprincipled scumbag.

For the record, along with Gephardt, the following 12 Congressmen did not cast a vote regarding the PBA ban: Burton (R-IN), Carson (D-OK), Dicks (D-WA), Eshoo (D-CA), Jones (D-OH), Lantos (D-CA), Larsin (D-CT), Lewis (R-KY), Lofgren (D-CA), Rothman (D-NJ), Ryan (R-WI) and Smith (D-WA). Burton, Carson, Lewis and Ryan would have almost certainly voted for the PBA ban had they been present; the others probably would have voted against it.

Yep. I know exactly what you're saying. But they feel the same way. So we're stuck I guess. I really think it wouldn't be so bad if the media around here didn't fan the flames. We must pay to get our message out while the other side can do it for free. With the passage of CFR, it will be even worse. The media is the winner around here. Too many people listen to them. The good news is their reputations are on the decline -- a self inflicted wound. Without the Internet, we'd be in BIG trouble.

If Greenwood had a racist substitute would the GOP vote the same way. Simply put, if Greenwood was pro-racist, he would not be a leader.
