[history]
More than four decades after he captured women's hearts on television's "Dr. Kildare," Richard Chamberlain decided to reveal his identity as a gay man "because I'm not afraid anymore."
"I'm not a romantic leading man anymore so I don't need to nurture that public image anymore," the 69-year-old Chamberlain said in an interview that aired Sunday on "Dateline NBC."

"I love my life just the way it is. I'm proud of my relationship. I'm actually proud of myself," Chamberlain said.At first, I misread this as - I love my wife just the way it is. - and, I got awfully confused.. LOL

That's hilarious! I remember a lot of women talking about how hot he was after "Shogun," and "The Thornbirds." LOL!

Coming out to sell books, no doubt about it. I wonder if he knows Gephardt's daughter?, he's using this issue too, to get votes.

"When I grew up, being gay, being a sissy or anything like that, was verboten," said Chamberlain, who lives in Hawaii. Today, it's verboten to say anything against the gay life choice. Remember Senator Santorum?? This coming out will boost your career, Dick.

Lots of immoral people achieve vocational success. (See Bill Clinton) What does one have to do with the other?

Chamberlain may not be a "romantic leading man" anymore but he did a great job in The Thorn Birds in my opinion. If I hadn't known better, I would've been fooled...
I always knew Chamberlain was "gay." As a 10 year old child in L.A., 1960, I went to visit former neighbors in a nearby suburb. Their new neighbor was Dick Chamberlain's brother and his family.
My friend, who was about 9 at the time, informed me that the TV star, her neighbor's brother, was "a queer." That's what they were called then, "queer," never "gay." Gay still meant happy, fun-loving, etc.
So...all through the Dr. Kildare years and so forth I knew the "secret" but I really think a LOT of people always knew it -- that sort of thing doesn't stay well hidden.
Regardless, I wish Chamberlain well and think he should have "come out" long ago.

Yeah right. And so is Nathan Lane.

At least the guy has minded his own business and never been on a soap box. I don't recall ever seeing his name in anything controversial.
