Washington -- Democratic presidential candidates running in the 2004 election are more sympathetic to gay and lesbian issues than any field in history, according to a report released Wednesday.

A study by the country's oldest national gay and lesbian political organization details differences among the nine announced Democratic candidates, from former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean's support for federal civil unions to Florida Sen. Bob Graham's opposition to allowing gays to serve openly in the military.

I agree with respecting people's privacy in the bedroom but I don't agree homosexuality is the moral equivalent of heterosexuality. There's a difference between letting people live as they wish and changing the entire underpinning of our civilization. One wonders if the Democrats acknowledge that keeping the rules that made our society a safe and decent place to live in isn't an expression of "homophobia." Americans don't want to see homosexuals harrassed or persecuted but neither do they wish to see the baby tossed out with the bath water in changing our views about what's right and wrong in our culture.

It is interesting to me to see my husband who never really had an opinion on this matter, becoming more and more anti-gay. He's a pretty tolerant person, good at withholding judgment, but the gay activists are not leaving much room for a tolerant middle ground on these issues.
