Hollywood Legend Jane Russell Slams Abortion In Interview
LifeSite ^ | Wednesday May 28, 2003

LONDON, May 28, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The UK Life League, a British pro-life group has reported that Jane Russell, the 1940s and '50s Hollywood movie star and pin-up girl, now aged 82, gave an interview this week slamming abortion. "People should never, ever have an abortion. Don't talk to me about it being a woman's right to choose what she does with her own body. The choice is between life and death," said Russell.

Describing her shock at finding herself pregnant at 18: "The only solution was to find a quack and get an abortion. I had a botched abortion and it was terrible. Afterwards my own doctor said: 'What butcher did this to you?' I had to be taken to hospital. I was so ill I nearly died. I've never known pain like it." Russell says that due to the abortion she was not able to have any other children.

How can you continue to willfully ignore the fact you got into this by maintaining MOST women DO NOT regret aborting? No one here is into hammering women for having abortions, only for justifying them.

Hildy, I "picket" an abortion clinic with a sign with the beautiful picture of a baby in the womb that was shown earlier on this thread that says "MOM, DAD, I WANT A CHOICE". You would not believe the horrible reactions that many women and men give me as they go by. They curse and say really mean and often lewd things to me. They tell me that my sign is the most horrible thing they have ever seen. They are often filled with anger and vileness. I believe it is because they do feel quilt but have hardened their hearts and have a deep seated anger. I am sure most of them would say "I don't feel any regret" but they are not able to see what it has done to them. I pray for them hoping God will soften their hearts and help them to see the truth about what they have done and know his love and willingness to forgive all of our sins.

I will pray for you. Believe me Hildy I'm no saint, but one of my children was the child of a rape. That was 33 years ago..(and three grandchildren ago for that particular child of mine. We will have 18 grandchildren as of this summer).

I did question my decision at times, because it was not acceptable back then to have a child if you were divorced and out of wedlock. Looking back I do NOT regret my decision..and I can assure you that abortions WERE available back then. I would even wager to say it would have been a lot easier at the time than what I endured considering the times. My reputation was shot and I suffered for that decision for a few years. But in the long run.. it was a total blessing.

Just today I was shopping with the third grandchild from my son, and I looked into the trusting adorable blue eyes of my 3 month old grandson, and I would NEVER trade even that ONE moment for anything in the world.

He is starting to giggle..and he coo's now. I can't even describe the joy I feel when I look at my grandchildren. Not only would I not have had the joy of my son in my life, but I would not have three of my grandchildren, they wouldn't exist if I had made a different decision. That being said.. I don't want women to feel guilt the rest of their lives.. but I do know that until this wrong is corrected there will never be normalcy for you.. I don't think you will ever be WHOLE until you come to terms with the wrong you did. It was too evil and too un-natural to allow for normalcy in your life. It will manifest somehow.. in bitterness or unhappiness. We have to ask for forgiveness and admit when we were wrong in order to grow and to get forgiveness. I wish forgiveness for you... I really do. There is so much FREEDOM in that.

I think the fact that you were on this thread fighting this hard speaks volumes. I'm guessing you are in great pain even if you aren't conciously aware of it.

I just want you to know I care..and I also know a loving Father does not want you to suffer. I hope you find that out one day. I'm so sorry for your baby..and I'm so sorry for you. Such a great loss.

If there is ever anything I can do to help.. let me know. I'd be happy to correspond via freepmail.

The whole point of this debate is that we are talking about people taking responsibility for making a decision to have sex. Or even for a LIFE growing in them when they did NOT CHOOSE to have sex as in cases of rape. That baby.. is/was innocent. They didn't ask for you to have sex.. or for their Moms to be raped. It wasn't the childs fault. So why kill them?

Surely you must have looked at the faces of children the ages of what your child might have been had he or she lived. Surely you must wonder about the life you denied them.

I'm just finding it extremely hard to imagine you have zero concious about this. Is that the "norm" we want in society? For people to be so cold.. so calous?

I think your situation is extremely sad. Like I said.. I will be praying for you.

I also think the greater message in this whole discussion is that people need to be responsible. If YOU mess up, or if something bad happens to you.. TAKE RESPONSIBILITY.. be PUT OUT for a while.. it is ONLY 10 months out of your entire life. Give LIFE a chance.

I will end this saying I was very pleased by Summers comments about the youth of today. How encouraging.

God Bless you Hildy.. I mean that with all my heart.. "M"

Her logic was by making abortion legal, good doctors would get into the practice...

Which is not what happened. Competent doctors with legitimate practices do not do abortions--for moral reasons, and because it will destroy their practice. Abortionists are the bottom-feeders, the butchers. Back-alley abortions are being done every day, just not in the back alley.

Abortion is abusing a child? I don't think so. How can an embryo or fetus with no body, head or brain be abused? A human being simply doesn't exist at that point.

Women should not be forced to become a parent just because she has sex. There is a huge difference between not allowing a pregnancy to continue (no baby has been "come to be" yet) and killing created born children or jews. If pro lifers can't grasp this basic fact then I really don't know what else to say.

Well, considering that the "past is being tinkered with," wouldn't it have been more wonderful to have the husband, and "her current great situation," and the baby?? It's okay to say that a good situation came out of something bad, but you can't use the good situation to justify making the bad decisions.

That's assuming having an abortion is always a bad decision. Not having children is a great decision for a lot of people, that is why people use contraception. Abortion is last chance birth control that is sometimes necessary due to bad decisions or bad circumstances that are out of persons control. It's not like they go through abortion procedures for fun. I do think abortion should be rareer, but not because it's "bad" or "evil", but because it is simply ridiculous to having medical outpatient procedures over and over to thwart pregnancy. It isn't practical considering all the effective contraceptive choices available.

I really don't understand how deciding to not have a baby automatically makes it a bad decision. People do it everyday it's calling planning family size. A fetus or embryo never MUST become a baby. If you don't want a baby why should you create one by growing one in a womb? She wasn't ready to go through pregnancy or be a mother at the time so why should she?

I do think at some point in the future, perhaps in the next generation, abortion will be outlawed in this country, as it is in Ireland.

That is never going to happen. pro lifers are fighting a losing battle, better pack up the protest signs and go home.

"Hard to believe unless of course you dont think that you may get a chance to meet the soul of that child in heaven."

Unless she repents for the murder of her baby, she won't get a chance to meet that child's soul in heaven.

If it had a heart beating, visible eyes, the stubs of legs and arms forming is it a fetus? Do you know at what week that happens?

I think I have honestly seen some of the worst posts on this board EVER from the pro-abort crowd. I'll be back tomorrow... still reading, and too tired to start responding.

Quick thought: Most women don't find out/realize they are pregnant until between 6-8 weeks. The heart starts beating around the 25th DAY. In the first MONTH.

Blob of tissue? You tell me:

Pre-born baby in the womb. Eight weeks old. Truth hurts. Choose Life.

"She said she would never choose adoption because she would always wonder if the parents were abusers."

So her fear of POSSIBLE abuse is worse than DEFINITE murder.

"From the accounts I've read and heard, the proceedure is reportedly not so painless."

No. It sure isn't. And mine wasn't a voluntary abortion, it was a D&C because my baby died at 8 weeks in utero. I was medicated with both an analgesic and an amnesial. Didn't work. I can definitely remember the pain of each and every scrape. Sorry to be graphic.

Do people actually allow you to sit on their furniture?

Very good point concerning the attitude toward abortion of the kids coming up now. Each and every one of them knows very well that organizations such as Planned Parenthood, NARAL, the Guttmacher Foundation, and the Democratic Party actually had in mind to kill them in the womb.

One can imagine the terror of growing up in a nation full of psycho-sociopaths who would kill a baby without a shred of guilt.

Interesting that the killers are the ones who think the other side are the ones who are nuts!

"Don't call me "darlin'""

It's just a Southern thing......no offense intended. I think you're a fine enough person, no doubt; have seen your posts for a long time...............but I admit I find it interesting that a term of endearment offends you, but the thought of ripping a fetus limb from limb doesn't seem to.

I'm a dad of 7, so I have strong feelings about such things having seen every one of them born.

Hildy, that still doesn't answer my question, but I will accept that you don't regret having an abortion and don't feel any remorse. I don't judge you in any way for your decision. I just think you are among the minority of women who feel this way. Some people have a hard time about it and some don't, I suppose.

I was unable to have children myself and went through a lot of emotional anguish, but that's my experience. One of my sisters adopted 3 children after one heartbreaking miscarriage, but that's her experience. A male relative's girlfriend had an abortion years ago and he and she still suffer emotional anguish about it, but that's their experience. I have an abundance of other experiences like this I could relate but I won't.

I'm not going to "have at you" --- you made your choice and have made another choice to not have any feelings about it. That's fine with me. It just seems that you wish more people were like you and could just have an abortion with no regrets.
