Ohio County(WV) is about 50 miles SW of Pittsburgh, PA., and Wheeling, WV is the county seat.

If he has SARS, he presumably caught it in Toronto while Toronto was supposedly SARS-free.

"If he has SARS, he presumably caught it in Toronto while Toronto was supposedly SARS-free."

Not encouraging. We're getting leakage around the edges.

I've been reading a little about the raccoon dogs.

If they "can" spread SARS they'll be a problem.

It looks like they are wild and hunted over a good part of Asia and Europe besides being raised for food and pelts.

One article I read said they live well in the wild near human habitation and like to raid garbage, etc. around settled areas.

Thank you politicians who are more worried about short-term economic consequences instead of doing the right thing.

This is a weird story. From the article:

Dr. Mercer says the health department is keeping an eye on nearly twenty people who have been in contact with the man. He says they're asking those people to take their temperature twice a day. So far, Dr. Mercer says those people have not been asked to stay in isolation. Dr. Mercer says they're testing the patient's blood for antibodies that single SARS, he says it will take three weeks to find out if the man actually the virus. Wheeling Hospital say patients and visitors to the hospital are not at risk of contracting SARS.

The article makes a series of incongruous statements: (1) it's a probable case of SARS, (2) but no one's being quarantined, (3) the health dept won't have test results for 3 more weeks, (4) and don't worry, no others at the hospital are at risk.

Either they don't really think the guy has a "probable" case of SARS, or they're taking some incredible chances.

If SARS hits the USA hard, it will not be easy to contain--because no one (liberals, conservatives or libertarians) will easily accept mandatory quarantines. There will be too many cries about infringement on civil liberties.

Sounds like institutional denial. Maybe the CDC will call them up (let's hope so.)

CDC is just as loony!

They say people shouldn't be wearing masks outside.

They lift travel advisories.

CDC and WHO are acting criminally.

We will all pay the price.

These incongruities almost make me wonder if the Asiatic pool is more susceptible than the rest. Health care workers seem to be the first afflicted in the East.

Of course, American and Mexican 'Indians' share the same such Mongolian genes.

Scientists Discover Agent for Removing SARS from Skin

BELGRADE -- Scientists from the Vinca Nuclear Science Institute near Belgrade have discovered an agent able to remove the SARS virus from the skin and contaminated surfaces.

A statement released by the Vinca instituteТs laboratory for Multi-Disciplinary Research explains that experiments conducted on surface proteins of the SARS virus and its components led to the isolation of a material that can effectively link the virus on its surface.

The statement reads: The substance in question has been synthesized and researched by the Vinca Nuclear Science Institute for two decades.

When suspension of the substance comes into contact with skin contaminated by the SARS virus it literally Сtakes overТ the virus due to its greater affinity for linking the matter.

The institute stressed that this research had led to the discovery of an efficient and completely harmless agent, which can considerably help in the fight against the spread of infection by the SARS virus.
