bomb went off in mail room, bomb went off right after 4:50 or so, room below mail room damaged, plaster down, lucky people exited just before blast
nbc local station reports
amr ambulance on scene, but no injuries

I won't believe it's AQ unless something else happens. I don't believe that either. But having gone to college with Muslims who absolutely hated this country, I know their idea of what symbolizes America is very different than ours.

"They are very, very sharp, and if this was a mail bomb they are the folks you want to investigate it." I would be incredibly shocked if it turns out this was a mail bomb.

bomb went off in mail room
From Jack Balkin, a professor at Yale College of Law
http://balkin.blogspot.com/2003_05_18_balkin_archive.html#94705926 Explosion at Yale Law School
I was walking out of the Law School building a little before five o'clock in the afternoon with Jim Ryan to get some coffee when we both heard a big explosion from the Yale Law School buliding. A few minutes later, the entire Yale Law School community was walking down York street. Apparently an explosion occured in Room 120 on the first floor. Several students reported seeing a fireball in the main hallway that connects the various classrooms. Others reported that the wall in the Alumni reading room next to room 120 was destroyed.
The Law School has been cordoned off, and police have surrounded the area. I'm told the FBI has been called in. It's still not clear if this is an accident (an exploding pipe) or a crime scene (a bomb).
As of yet, there are no reports of injuries, but we don't know if anyone was in Room 120 when the explosion occured. This week is parrt of exam period and I don't know if students were working there.
I'm very worried about my students.

"Jeepers all.... they are both pretty girls" No kidding. Why don't we fight about it. <\sarcasm>

it's a million times more likely to be the work of someone with a specific grudge against Yale, or at least against a specific person at Yale. A Unabomber-style mailbomber out to get a professor, and the bomb went off in the mailroom somehow? In that case, it's a good thing it was law school. If it had been a science major it would have gone off in the wrong place. You'd think a lawyer wannabe would target the prof or the school by suing them.
there doesn't seem to be a lot of hard physical damage
I'd call blowing out part of the floor pretty much hard physical dammage.

Hang in there. No injuries reported, yet.

It's right across the street from the Grove Street cemetery.

Personally I would bet on ... An optimistic view posed by a member of the general public to be sure ...
I still, at this point, have to go with latent defects in material, rot or poor workmanship ...

bomb went off in mail room.
I'm not convinced this is the case (yet). Other (reliable) sources say a bomb may have exploded in a classroom.
To: Fixit
Just amazing that no one was injured in this.
It sounds like chance that there was no one in the area of the fireball in the hallway.
AQ struck out this time, at least in terms of casualites--but in terms of terror, once again they've hit their mark.
To: RaceBannon
If it's terrorism, I'd be very worried about a secondary device. If this the only device, then I'd say someone didn't want to take a final, or had it in for a student or a prof and fortunately the timer worked improperly.
