That is what Morpheus, a character in the movie, The Matrix, said to Neo as he explained that the world had been largely destroyed in a great battle between the computers and the humans. The conquered humans were kept in a sedated state of mind, living in a dream world. All but a few were perfectly content to serve as slaves to the computers. Shocked that everything he knew of the world around him was only a virtual reality, Neo could barely breathe.
The premise of the movie, while science fiction, quite accurately sums up the political situation in our country. The parallels are uncanny. And its enough to take your breath away.
Most Americans are under the belief that we live in a two-party political system where all the citizens have an equal opportunity to participate in the political process. We choose which side we are on and believe that by working within the established system, we will be able to influence the direction of our country. Great effort is expended electing the candidates we think will best promote our worldview.
The tears and emotions flow on the evening of a winning election. All involved congratulate themselves on their efforts, confident that finally, something is going to get done. Most go home after the election night rally in a somewhat euphoric state, holding every assurance that the person they helped elect intends to do all the things they promised they would do.
I had my own Matrix Moment when I came to realize that all the efforts I had put into the two-party political system were completely meaningless. It was really quite a shock.
This is not a claim that there is any one particular conspiracy at work. But, we have ended up with a political system that allows the masses to be involved and active in fighting for a cause under a false belief that the efforts will make a difference. We do get a scrap now and then, but the fundamentals do not look very promising.
If the people were to figure out that our whole political process is completely rigged, there would be riots in the streets. If the people discovered that our accelerating slide toward totalitarianism is going to continue without regard to which political party is in power, there would be a revolution. That is why it is important that the people remain content in the illusion that they can influence the system.
So like the slaves in The Matrix, we have been sedated.
In what seems like a cruel joke, the dedicated partisans are encouraged to stay busy promoting their causes. While those in power work to ensure they will never succeed.
You really have to marvel at the system. That so many could have been fooled for so long is amazing!
Consider just a few facts. Since the "conservative" Republicans took control of Congress in 1994:
1 Federal spending is up almost 60%, from $1.4 trillion in 1994 to over $2.2 trillion today! That is almost exactly the same percent increase that occurred between 1986 and 1993 - when the Democrats controlled Congress!
2 Republicans continue to fund Planned Parenthood, PBS, and the National Endowment for the Arts to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars a year.
3 The Department of Education continues to squander $60 billion a year.
4 The Department of Agriculture has 131,000 employees that work out of 7,400 field offices. That is unbelievable! The USDA spends $77 billion a year telling the nations farmers how to (or how not to) farm.
5 An EPA clerk shuts down hundreds of Oregon family farms because some obscure fish upstream needed the water. This happened even though the farmers had contractual rights to the water. There was no appeal process and hundreds lost their livelihoods.
6 Conservative Republican Senator Gordon Smith runs his 2002 campaign on a solid homosexual rights agenda.
7 We continue to send billions to an America-hating, world-government promoting organization called the United Nations.
8 Our pro-life President refuses to write a one page, signed memo to the FDA directing them to ban the use of a WMD called RU-486. This chemical weapon has killed over 500,000 American children since 1994 and could be outlawed tomorrow morning on his authority alone!
9 Over 10,000,000 American children have been killed by abortion since 1994, turning the Republican Revolution into what would be more appropriately described as the Republican Reign of Terror.
10 On March 13, 2003, in an historic betrayal, forty-eight Republican members of the U.S. Senate voted to reaffirm Roe v. Wade.
The list goes on and on. By any objective evaluation, we find that there is no discernable difference in our how our Government is run regardless of whether the Democrats or the Republicans are in charge. Every year our spending increases and our debt continues to grow - going on $7 trillion today. Every year we find ourselves more heavily regulated, more heavily taxed and more heavily controlled.
Of course, one of the most tragic consequences of our illusion of a government is that every year, no matter which party is in power, another 1,300,000 unborn children will be killed.
The dream world we are living in has become a nightmare. And it is quickly enslaving all of us. By continuing to participate in our fraudulent system of government, we are all part of the problem.
Those we have entrusted to represent us in our government have betrayed us. There are some exceptions of course. But most of the politicians from both the Republican and Democratic Parties have refused to honor the oaths they made when they were sworn into office. The fact is, most have actively worked to undermine the very Constitution they swore to defend! This makes them no better than the renegades and criminals from which our government is supposed to protect us.
The only real hope we have is to return to the foundations that made this country great and the Constitution is the key. It could only have been the Spirit of God that gave our founders the inspiration to write such a brilliant document.
We just need to elect the men and women who will do what it says.

What good is the $5 billion Transportation Security Administration if it can't keep armed impostors from breezily bypassing security checkpoints and boarding planes?

Rep. Terry Everett (R-ALA.) sneaked $202,500 for a National Peanut Festival into economic development appropriations.
2003 Labor/HHS/Education Appropriations Bill included an $800,000 gift to the Grammy Foundation for music and arts education. Never mind that the Grammy Foundation board is studded with millionaire mega-stars.
Appropriators handed out $500,000 to the International Coffee Organization, whose professed goal is to stimulate the coffee economy. Coffee is good, but protecting our troops and confronting threats from rogue states should come before handouts.

Commentary to 'chew on'.
BUMP!!!!
If the first one creeped you out, the second is going to blow you away.
This is silliness. We have a 2 party system because that is the natural result with our winner take all method of choosing the President and legislature. Neither party can deviate too far from the center of the electorate without being marginalized. Great leaders lead the electorate away from the center to where they want to take it--FDR and Reagan in the last century.
When a conservative can set his election agenda on a solid gay rights base and win, the fix is in. The gays are around 1% of the voting base at best. But the Gay agenda is part of the Global agenda. The nice part of the Matrix, is the sleepers begin to awake.
