No sex, please: The celebrated bawdiness of New Orleans' French Quarter is getting out of hand, according to members of a legislative committee who voted Thursday to impose fines and a 10-day jail sentence for people having sex in public.

Rep. Danny Martiny's bill would outlaw sexual intercourse in public "for the purpose of gaining the attention of the public."

This bill is aimed at the most outrageous acts, said Martiny, R-New Orleans. "It's not trying to make Mardi Gras not fun."

Sex in public? I don't know but if you're caught doing the nookie in the woods or on a moonlight beach, I guess you should do the time together.

Well, it is a major enough problem that a state representative thought it was worthy of corrective legislation!

No, the bill would apply everywhere in the state if it became laws. Yet, it was French Quarter decadence, particularly at Mardi Gras, that prompted the lawmaker to introduce his bill, as I understand it.

Saw a recent episode of "Cops" in which Nawlins police were arresting men and women for exposing themselves in public during Mardi Gras. Why do they need more laws. Silly question, don't we always need more laws.

I hear you, but that's a rather low bar.

You just gotta follow the link. The last line of the story is:

Legislative leaders are planning a four-day Memorial Day holiday weekend.

Presumably a few of them will take this opportunity to check out this problem in person...

But Officer, we weren't doing it to get attention!

Let's arrest people for kissing in public at the drop of a hat. It could damage children's psyches.

I've spent some time at conventions in New Orleans. Seeing people exposing themselves was something I fully expected (and my expectations were accurate).

Public sex is a bit different, though.

You can see people exposing themselves on any night of the week in the FQ. I was there a few years back for a conference, just having a stroll/drink after a full day of meetings. It was pretty empty out, but as I sat at an outoor cafe, a number of 'youts' where encouraging some ladies to provide some entertainment just for a few token beads.

However, it wasn't just the younger ladies that obliged - I swear a classy high-end mid-40s Greenwich type, with her 50s country club hubby, armed witha fresh new tit job, proudly pivoted and displayed for all to see right there on the street.

Vegas is pretend sin city - the FQ is the real thing.
