Gay pride rally draws 1,500 teens to the Hub

After bouncing between nine residential programs, four foster families and an untold number of bigots, homelessness didn't seem like such a bad alternative to Eve Serrano.

``My life is no picnic,'' said Serrano, 20, a Latina lesbian honor student of the School of Hard Knocks who was received with empathetic applause from some 1,500 like-minded survivors at yesterday's ninth annual Gay/Straight Youth Pride rally in Copley Square.

Serrano, who shed frilly frocks and flowing locks for crewcuts and cargo pants when she was 13, said she grew up in a New Jersey ghetto listening to her own family berate her for being gay.

``They told me I was going to hell,'' she said.

``When I was 11, I tried to kill myself.

``I could no longer deal with the pressure of being normal.

``Lucky for me, I'm stubborn.''

Teens representing 54 high schools from Beverly to Nantucket were expected to attend what is touted as the world's oldest, largest gathering of gay and lesbian kids.

Springfield police Detective Michael Carney, president of the 150-member Gay Officers Action League, was proud to count himself among their role models.

``They don't need to be ridiculed or demeaned,'' Carney said.

``Still, today in schools, teachers are still calling kids fags and queers.''

"Still, today in schools, teachers are still calling kids fags and queers."

Yeah, right, that's why the education establishment is pushing your agenda for you.

Oh sure, I remember teachers calling kids fags and queers -- NO FREAKING WAY!!!!!!!

Serrano, who shed frilly frocks and flowing locks for crewcuts and cargo pants when she was 13, said she grew up in a New Jersey ghetto listening to her own family berate her for being gay. ``They told me I was going to hell,'' she said.

My charge? She's lying about her family. They probably gave her a hard time about her rebellious attitude. And if she started acting gay at 13 it's because someone influenced her.

Further, if she was with her family until 13 when they berated her for being gay, how is it she went to 9 shelters and 4 foster homes in 5 years? Might she have been completely rebellious and difficult to handle? I guess she finally found her niche and is out to convert others. Why take responsibility for years of bad behavior when you can blame it on others by joining the latest trendy victim class?

The Hispanic community is a culture of homophobia. It is time to close the borders. We can't let the illegal immigrants import their hate to America. / SARCASM

I have pictures of me at age thirteen sporting a crewcut and wearing cargo pants (with my name sewn in them).

I didn't know what a fag or a queer was.

the dirty secret is that homosexuals try and boost their ego by calling normal people "breeders". I would like to see a non-religious foundation to cure homoseuxality. That would freak the homsexuals.

Its a behavior, it does not justify special protections for a mere FETISH!

``I could no longer deal with the pressure of being normal.

That explains the whole movement.

I'm pretty sure that NARTH (National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality) is secular.

Yes, it is. And I bet you call yourself a "Christian", too.

Just that I think your "Christian fundamentalism" is probably the furthest thing from Christ's Sermon on the Mount, his essential teaching, imho.

I'll use my cut n paste that I just wrote. Sums it up. About the poisonous sickness infecting the right:

I don't think FR is for me. As much as I love to read the news from a right perspective, being the good little libertarian I am with my distrust and dislike of Clinton, big government, my desire for local control over community issues, my respect for the Constitution, etc, I don't have any bile or bitterness against fundies at all. Instead, I'm kinda sad, that the movement for all the government principles I hold dear is poisoned from within, by the rabid "Christian" fundamentalist right, paranoid and delusional, and particularly fearful, ignorant and hateful of gay people, it's really unpleasant to watch. I live in NY, where this apoplexy regarding sexuality is a weird oddity, completely disconnected from reality, reason, kindness, civility, etc. It's the Achille's heel of the GOP and in about 10 years, the party will be torn asunder for it. Very sad, when we have a real opportunity to reduce gov't...instead, because of the right's in-fighting and hubris, I see a very strong resurgence of bloated gov't and spending, ridiculous nanny stating from a well-intentioned, yes, but completely misguided left.

The thing you fundies have to let go, (though I know you won't, it's so ingrained in your wet apocolyptic dreams, the Second Coming of Christ to save y'all, etc.) is that the future IS a pluralistic society, where, yup, even homosexuals are respected. The world is leaving you behind and y'all are scared, can't deal with it, can't move on. So the world will move on without you. Most of us rational people move along with it. You won't. And you will hurt. And you will hurt the future of a Republican party dedicated to the ideals of the Constitution.

As I see it. Take care, good luck.

And peace and blessings.
