the newspaper weighed in with a whopper of a front-page piece last week, suggesting that Justice Department officials sabotaged sniper suspect John Allen Muhammad's imminent confession in Montgomery County.

Almost a year ago the lovable WashTimes was calling NYT's on its whoppers, which, I confess, were obvious. In this case, for example, it just did not seem reasonable that Justice officials would hose up one of the most important cases to this region in the last decade.

Unfortunately, NYT lies quickly make it into the public consciousness, and become difficult to dislodge with facts. Note how many people still believe the NYT whoppers about the Iraqi museum.

Readers of The New York Times may not have heard the last of Michael Finkel.

Two weeks after the paper said Finkel would get no more assignments, because the writer used "improper narrative techniques" in a piece from Africa for The New York Times Magazine, a review of his other articles continues.

According to Finkel, The Times is "sending someone into Haiti and Gaza," areas that figured in two pieces he wrote for the magazine in 2000.

Asked if locales mentioned in Finkel's eight other pieces were being visited as part of an ongoing investigation, Times assistant managing editor Allan Siegal said: "All we can say at this point is that we're using every means necessary to confirm that what we published is correct.

"We don't have further details to offer."

Responding to a question about The Times' fact-checking procedures, Siegal said: "We are certainly studying what we could have done better or differently within the constraints of time and staff size, but for the moment we've reached no conclusions except that the Finkel/Malé article appears to have been a lone aberration."

In the November piece, Finkel's description of Youssouf Male, an African youth who worked on a cocoa plantation, improperly incorporated details learned about other boys in similarly hard circumstances.

Times correspondent resigned this month for plagiarism; University to review 30 articles Blair wrote while a student at College Park - COLLEGE PARK -- The University of Maryland said today it will review former New York Times reporter Jayson Blair's work at the journalism school's news service, while faculty members were left wondering where their once top student went wrong. In a letter sent to students, faculty and alumni today, Journalism Dean Thomas Kunkel said the university plans to hire an editor to check 30 articles Blair wrote in 1995 as a reporter for the Capital News Service, Maryland's wire service staffed by journalism students.

Kunkel said he was "floored" by a lengthy Times story Sunday that detailed chronic plagiarism, fabrications and lying by Blair during his nearly four years with the newspaper. Blair, 27, who left the university without graduating, was a driven and talented student and journalist, Kunkel said, whose work did not arouse any suspicions among the faculty. In an interview, Kunkel said the news was "like a kidney punch," saying school officials were devastated that "one of our own would turn his back on every principle that we hold dear."***

NY Times Adds "Source Code" to All Stories

2002-11-12) -- The publisher of The New York Times today announced that the paper will begin adding a "source code" to each story it publishes on paper, or on the internet. The code system will help the reader understand how the story came to be written.

Here is initial list of codes which will appear just under each headline to explain how the story came to be:

RIP= Reporter's Investigative Piece: our reporter came up with this idea, did the research and wrote the story.

SH= Something Happened: Some event took place and we reacted by writing this story.

TB= Trial Balloon: person quoted in story is floating an idea to see how our readers will respond.

SRTRQ= Source Reacts to Reporters Question: source in story was forced to comment on some topic by persistent reporters' questions. Story presented as if source had brought up the subject.

NRE= News Release Edited: story is little more than a PR news release edited to make you think we did some actual journalism.

NRU= News Release Unedited: story is verbatim news release. We don't care what you think.

OFI= Old Friend Idea: a former reporter, now doing PR, planted this story. Reporter 'owed him one'.

SND=Slow News Day: speaks for itself.

WUS= Watch Unnamed Source: Anonymous source in story is same as named source, speaking on "background" (see also TB, above)

DBI= Drinking Buddy Idea: speaks for itself.

TDI=Top Down Idea: someone in corporate headquarters emailed an editor and asked, "When's the last time we did a story on...?"

SI=Stolen Idea: some other news organization just did a piece on this, and we were caught with our pants down. Now, we're trying to appear to be more 'in-depth' than them on the topic.

AI=Astrologer Idea: the paper's 'advisor' said it would be a good day for such a story.

TT=Thesis Theme: story is shorter version of reporter's doctoral thesis, and he can't wait to get that Ph.D. so he can get into academia and teach journalism instead of being faced with the daily grind of cranking out garbage that no one reads.
