President Bush’s pledge to extend the ban on semiautomatic assault weapons has gun owners up in arms.

The House defeated a pro-gun amendment, by a vote of 369-54, to pull the United States out of the anti-gun United Nations.
169 House Republicans voted against the amendment.

HATCH-CRAIG GUN CONTROL AMENDMENT (May 14, 1999) -

The Republican bill provided several restrictions on gun ownership. It would require background checks for any private sale at a gun show. Additionally, it would assign a U.S. attorney to every district for the purpose of harassing gun owners.

47 of 55 Republican Senators voted FOR this legislation.

BANNING PRIVATE SALES OF FIREARMS AT GUN SHOWS

This amendment would ban private sales at gun shows unless the buyer first submits to a background registration check. The amendment would also impose numerous restrictions on gun show promoters.

On May 20, 1999 , this amendment passed. Six Republicans sided with the Democrats in favoring this anti-gun legislation, resulting in a 50-50 tie vote and allowing Vice President Al Gore to cast the tie breaking vote.

BACKGROUND REGISTRATION CHECKS (May 20, 1999)-

Senators Gordon Smith (R-OR) and James Jeffords (R-VT) introduced more restrictions on gun sales with this amendment. It subjects pawnshop and repair shop transactions to the same registration and background check requirements as purchases from dealers.

The amendment passed 79-21, with 34 of 55 Senate Republicans voting FOR the gun control legislation.

OMNIBUS REPUBLICAN GUN CONTROL PACKAGE

On June 18, 1999 , the House defeated the Hyde-McCollum “Mandatory Gun Show Background Check Act” by a 280-147 vote. This bill contained many anti-gun provisions, including trigger locks, a young adult gun ban, and lifetime gun ban for certain juveniles.

137 House Republicans voted for the gun control package.

· ENFORCEMENT OF EXISTING GUN LAWS AND PROTECTION OF GUN OWNERS

Senator Trent Lott (R-MS) offered a resolution that called for more aggressive enforcement of existing gun laws, tougher penalties for gun-related crimes and protection for the rights of law-abiding gun owners. On May 17, 2000 , the non-binding vote passed 69-30.

52 of 55 Senate Republicans voted FOR more stringent enforcement of existing gun laws.

· NO U.N. GUN CONTROL ( July 18, 2001 ) –

Representative Ron Paul (R-TX) offered another amendment to withdraw the United States from the United Nations. Paul argued that the country should boycott the international gun control organization, which is actively “taking guns away from civilians”.

164 House Republicans voted against the amendment.

You are right. This is madness. Are these knuckleheads being bribed? Blackmailed?

Why are they deliberately undermining our right to protect ourselves and our families?

They are afraid of an armed populace.

woth repeating:

A semiautomatic rifle or shotgun originally designed for military or law enforcement use, or a firearm based on the design of such a firearm, that is not particularly suitable for sporting purposes, as determined by the Attorney General. In making the determination, there shall be a rebuttable presumption that a firearm procured for use by the United States military or any Federal law enforcement agency is not particularly suitable for sporting purposes, and a firearm shall not be determined to be particularly suitable for sporting purposes solely because the firearm is suitable for use in a sporting event.

There is no reason to fear productive, law-abiding, freedom loving, armed Americans UNLESS you are fixing on harming them.

The sponsors of this bill is the "whose who" list of sleazy RATS in the H of R. All of the usual suspects are listed. These RATS are more concerned with the rights of illegal immigrants and criminals than they are with yours.

Their motivation is identical to that of the people who passed Jim Crow laws and the Nazi Neuremburg Laws. The purpose is to oppress a class of pariahs, in the earlier cases blacks and jews, in the case at hand, gun owners.

Never, ever forget what this conflict is about. These, our rulers truly believe that we are "born with a saddle" on our backs and they are "booted and spurred to ride" us. It is a lot less fun to be a tyrant, even an elected one, if you have to worry about a .308 veto all the time.

I don't trust Bush any more on the 2nd amendment than I do on his defense of our borders against the invasion of 20 million illegal aliens. When Bush came out against arming pilots after 9/11, I knew he would endorse the "assault weapons" ban when the time arose. Bush is no conservative.

There is an excellent article in today's Washington Times (www.washingtontimes.com) by John Lott about the absurdity of the assault weapons ban, and why it is just another disguise at disarming the American people on a sweeping level. (I don't know how to link the article to this post which is why I supplied the website).

Today, in the Wall Street Journal, there was a blurb on the front cover about how the British cops don't want to carry guns (about 80%), and that "gun crime (in Britain) is rare." What crap -- everyone who has paid attention to the issue knows that an unprecedented epidemic of gun crime is pervasive now over there as a direct result of the gov't.'s confiscation of firearms and outlawing ownership. In England, as we know on this site, it is so corrupt that even self-defense is against the law. Looks like I am writing a letter to the WSJ editor today.

I would expect this anti-gun propaganda in the New York Slimes, but not the Wall Street Journal. But then again, the Journal, mouthpiece of big business, loves to cheerlead and defend the illegal invasion, and make up all these imaginary reasons on their editorial page why they are such a blessing to this country.

Jack, I am an unabashed and huge defender of the 2nd amendment (I would have to be to be brave enough to walk the streets of the Socialist Republic of NJ and Manhattan in an NRA cap) so thanks for the ping. And Conservative, could you add me to your bang/ping list. Thanks.

METHUEN -- People in Greater Lawrence who apply for a handgun license for the first time now need a letter from their doctor stating they are medically and psychologically fit.

And what physician in his right mind would sign such a form, and expose himself to open-ended liability for his certification? Particularly after getting a notification from his malpractice insuror advising him that his insurance would be cancelled if he did so?
