(AP) - Pictures of Civil War battle scenes were temporarily covered with sheets or removed from a Williamsburg hotel's walls last week at the insistence of a group of judges and court officials from Washington, D.C.
Leah Gurowitz, a spokeswoman for the D.C. courts, said organizers of a training conference for judicial officials feared images of the Confederate battle flag at the Radisson Fort Magruder Hotel and Conference Center would be offensive to some participants.
"As part of the contract, we asked that there wouldn't be any Confederate flag images in the main area," Gurowitz said.
Officials of the hotel, which is named after a nearby Confederate fort, agreed. Two framed pictures hanging near the lobby were covered with white sheets. Two other pictures were removed.
Gurowitz called the request a "preventative" measure on the part of the conference's planners because the Confederate flag has been a contentious issue among races and the subject of a number of debates, rallies and even boycotts throughout the South.
Larry V. Wood, general manager of the hotel, declined to comment.
In addition to the pictures, the hotel displays a variety of Civil War memorabilia, including framed art pieces of Confederate uniforms, weapons and war heroes.

Welcome to the United States of the Offended.

I've been there, and remember the paintings of the rebel generals. Also on the walls are paintings of U. S. Army generals such as Darius Couch. I wonder what happened to them.
BTW, one of the rebel redoubts from the Seven Days campaign is is the hotel courtyard.

HOW ARE YOU GENTLEMEN!!!
YOU ARE ON YOUR WAY TO DESTRUCTION!
Not to mention, that hotel is on the spot of the famous Ft. McGruder that was used by McGruder in the 3rd line of Defence in the Penninsula Campaign. Gee, I wonder if the patrons knew that if they would even enter the hotel!

If I were the owner of that hotel I would have politely told the conference and judges to shove it.

"Two framed pictures hanging near the lobby were covered with white sheets."
I, personally, am VERY offended by the use of, and even the mere mention of "white sheets". (/dripping volumous sarcasm)

Now it's the politically correct crowd that have need of the white sheets. Will they have eyeholes in their sheets soon?

.....boy-oh-boy if those conference attendees are offended by that they better not go down the road a piece to Colonial Williamsburg.....last time I was there one of the docents gave a balanced presentation representing a sucessful free black farmer who was also a slave holder.....

This has long since passed the point of being ridiculous. I don't agree with your cause but I'm sorry for the indignities currently being dumped on it.

Thank you sir. We do have our differences, but the fact that you acknowledge these injustices speaks volumes.
Had you been party to this judges convention, I would expect that you would view the pictures from a historical perspective as a piece of American History and not demanded that they be removed.

they made me want to PUKE!
there is no future, longterm, for any scalawag/damnyankee apologist ANYWHERE in dixie.
