California targets new S&W handgun cartridge

Continuing his vigorous career in authoring oppressive firearms
legislation, thereby restricting law-abiding citizens instead of
criminals, CA State Senator Don Perata is trying to pass SB 601,
which would ban sale/possession of .50 caliber handguns. This bill
is positioned to target the new S&W .500 Magnum cartridge...

Once again firmly under American ownership, Smith & Wesson is
striking back in a big way.  At recent hearing in Sacramento,
Smith & Wesson's legal team addressed the Senate Public Safety
Committee with strong testimony against TWO dangerous bills:

SB 601, which seems to single-out their product and...

SB 489, a Semi-Auto Handgun Bill - would require that all
semiautomatic handguns manufactured after January 2005 that are
imported and sold in California be equipped with a loaded chamber
indicator and a magazine disconnect mechanism.

And on the Assembly side, notoriusly anti-gun Assemblyman Paul Koretz
has introduced AB 50, which would ban the sale/possession of .50 BMG
rifles and the sale/possession of .50 BMG cartridges.  Many thanks to
Ronnie Barrett of Barrett Firearms and Bill Ritchie, owner of EDM
Arms for their strong testimony against AB 50.

How can you effectively fight SB 601, SB 489 and AB 50?

You're not working out your own loads ?

Wasn't S&W the first one to bow down to the Clintonistas a few years ago ?
How did they get back in good graces again ?

Just giving the others a hard time about the laws - perhaps someday we will all enjoy the same freedom from gun laws that they have in places like... Iraq.

S&W was purchased by an American company (Safe-T-Hammer) that makes an internal type of gun lock. The Brits no longer own the company nor do they dictate company policy. The inane deal made with the Clintonistas has dried up and died since Bush took office.

I prefer to start with tested loads from a manual. I probably won't even have the S&W .500 Magnum until sometime in the Fall. There is a huge backlog of orders. The .454 Casull and .45-70 can both lob a 300 gr bullet. The Casull can tolerate up to 60,000 CUP and can push that 300 gr bullet at 1600 fps. My .45-70 BFR revolver is only rated to 31,000 PSI by the factory. Much lower pressure. Lower muzzle velocities too. Until I know the specs of the new S&W, I won't be taking unnecessary risks by guessing.

The Performance Center model weighs in at 82 ounces. I expect the felt recoil to be more pleasant than my lighter Ruger .454 Casull at 58 ounces when firing a similar cartridge.

BTW: I am looking for a small, light weight, concealed carry type of pistol chambered for the .50 BMG round. Any leads?

california really needs to be divided into two or three smaller states. North and south california.

Oops! Sorry about that. I forgot that Indiana's laws are not California's laws. IC 35-47-2.5 only addresses purchasers who buy with the intent to sell to ineligible buyers. Private sellers are only in violation of they have reason to know that the recipient is ineligible (and there are exceptions to that, for example providing a gun to a child for safety courses, etc).

it appears life will continue to become more difficult for gunowners in Calif. until there are dramatic changes in the legislature.

Those changes only come about one way - and the rest of us "outsiders" watching California keep waiting for it to happen.

You ARE kidding, no?

I suppose that you could use a "lightweight/carry" .50 BMG pistol, if you don't mind using solid leather wrist supports/reinforcements strapped inconspicuously to your shoulders and waist.

That contraption alone will conceal the .50 lightweight. But you're not likely to be able to drive, either.

Another indication that S&W is out from under the Clinton deal is that they are working against the other bill mentioned, concerning loaded chamber indicators and magazine disconects. Most of their autos (with the exception of the Walther clone 99) have this feature already. And the 99 has a loaded chamber indicator.

Does anyone really think that the B and F in BFR stands for Best and Finest? :)

That is about right, one that can fire three shot bursts, high cap mag and capable of holding a surpressor. Also easy to conceal.

CCW laws makes it easy for the government to identify and track known firearm owners. Just another nail in our coffin.
Why don't you fight for free unrestricted rights.

Sorry officer, boris sold that gun to me last year, and I sold it to my neighbor's old college buddy last month. I have no idea where he lives, and my neighbor died last week. So sorry!

OK, how about "Sorry officer, I lost that gun in a freak canoeing accident."

Of course. People in South Dakota have nothing if not clean and pure minds/hearts, except for Tom Daschle, who is merely "saddened."
