Zot all you will, but Redux's two offerings today didn't need to be burnt. They stood as steaming......er.... memorials to DUfer 'thought'.
This particular thread was a prime example which reminded me of Bill Clinton's 3+ hour speech at the DNC convention in Atlanta, 1988, ranked as possibly the world's most boring event ever in prime time.

Redford's article, understandably deleted, is one of the most asinine articles I have ever seen.

"Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesars" (Matt. 22:21) Popped into my head, as well.

Exactly. He wasn't about the temporal, but the spiritual. What does government have to do with one's eternal soul?

"That's my current inclination, although I could be persuaded differently."
Surprise! An admin Mod who makes decisions while lacking conviction.
I must admit that I have not read one word of the material in question, so bring on the retorts.
To: billhilly
You are right. I should act more decisively, such as Jim did with RedBaiter2 years ago.

Could someone just sum this up? It is awfully long. It could be summed up in one sentence, really: "Jesus was a libertarian."

On Peter and 1 Peter 2:13-18
Another Bible passage that is sometimes cited by statists in an attempt to demonstrate that people ought to submit to mortal government is 1 Peter 2:13-18: Therefore submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake, whether to the king as supreme, or to governors, as to those who are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and for the praise of those who do good. For this is the will of God, that by doing good you may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men--as free, yet not using liberty as a cloak for vice, but as bondservants of God. Honor all people. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king. Servants, be submissive to your masters with all fear, not only to the good and gentle, but also to the harsh.
But Peter himself did not so submit! Peter and the apostles were arrested in Jerusalem by the Sadducees for preaching the gospel of Jesus and brought before the Sanhedrin court for questioning..
..But lastly, many unjust government actions have been supported by self-professed Christians, such as with Prohibition and the War on Drugs..
Amazing.
You know this and you know Romans 13, "render unto Caesar", the temple tax.. all of it..
And yet you attempt moral equivelence between lawful, proper and constitutional (on the state level) prohibitions on posessing dope and getting stoned to preaching the word of God that Jews & Gentiles might have eternal salvation?
I could be wrong, but I don't think your argument is going to convince anyone. It's conflicted, strained and tenuous at best and an outright deception at worst.

I think I've noted this before, but that's preposterous. Jesus is not an anarchist.
Jesus is a royalist.

Only if you want to equate anarchist and libertarian, an equation I reject.
The original title summed up the article (in all of its glorious inanity): Jesus is an anarchist.

I really appreciate how you handled this. The rant is offensive, but anyone can look at it that wants to, but you're not leaving it up as though it's normal and acceptable in the forum to viciously attack Christianity.

I scanned the article, and found the keyword I was looking for. "Hitler". Once an article uses Hitler, Nazi's or National Socialism to make a point I quit reading it and forget the whole thing. Hitler wasn't there; neither was National Socialism. However, the word Nazi was used once. Here's the sentence it came from: "One need only watch some of the old Nazi propaganda films of thousands of German youths goose-stepping in unison to realize just how effective this demonic world system can sometimes be in striping people of their humanity."
