VA State Senator Calls Pentagon and Arlington Nat. Cemetery, Symbols of War and Death!
Posted on 05/07/2003 4:25:50 AM PDT by chambley1
At a Arlington County Civic Federation debate last evening (May 6, 2003), concerning placement of a proposed MLB baseball stadium in Arlington, Virginia State Sen. Mary Margaret Whipple, D-31st called the Pentagon and Arlington National Cemetery symbols of war and death in the eyes of those that visit here. She said she supported the stadium because that would change that false perception and lure people here to the ballgames!
To me, they are symbols of sacrifice and freedom. Simple as that.
This is a disgrace. Ms. Whipple deserve a freeping and letters to the editor. Please help!

I think it is time we build a wall around the VA side of Arlington, give them back to D.C. and let them both have the government they deserve.

When I think of the Pentagon, I think of war. When I think of a cemetery, I think of death. Big deal.

Knowing the Arlington area, I don't doubt that this happened but is there a direct quote and/or a source?

When I think of the Pentagon, I think of war. When I think of a cemetery, I think of death. Big deal. Well, that is not what I think of. Visiting Arlington Cemetary, I was filled with a sense awe and pride in this country. All those heroes buried there are awesome.
And just driving by the Pentagon also inspired patriotism and wonder because of all the heroes working there.
Have you ever visited there? I can't image if you have that you would see just another cemetary and another building. If so, you are as bad as the good senator.

You might want to add "honor" to sacrifice and freedom while you're at it.

Dear Senator,
One person's symbol of war and death may be another
person's symbol of sacrifce for liberty and freedom,
but that tells me a aweful lot about those people.

Makes you wonder if she's related to Bill Whipple, the famous toilet paper squeezer.

Dear Senator Whipple,
I am astonished that you think that Arlington Cemetary is only a symbol of death. I have visited Arlington. Unlike you, I was humbled by the sacrifice of great Americans for my freedom. Our willingness to defend ourselves and others from tyranny and oppression brings a glimmer of hope to the entire world. As the daughter of a Korean veteran, and the wife of a submariner who honorably served his country, I am deeply disheartened that you would distainfully cast aside their sacrifice, for the likes of baseball. Baseball is America's pasttime. But, long after your proposed stadium crumbles into dust, the honor and dignity of those who have given their lives for their country, will live on.
Signed,
XXXXXXXXXXXXX

..called the Pentagon and Arlington National Cemetery symbols of war and death in the eyes of those that visit here. She left out honor... I guess it would be better in her mind to tear down the Kennedy Memorial Flame and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers and replace them with fast food chicken restaurants and strip malls.
