[history]
SPEND A FEW minutes with U.S. Rep. Ellen Tauscher, the most conservative Democrat in the Bay Area's congressional delegation, and you realize just how far to the right politics in Washington have shifted.
Very far.
Unbeknown to most Americans, she says, a "fundamentalist revolution" has taken place in the United States -- a revolution comparable to those that have taken place in the Islamic world.

"These are not compassionate people," she said. "They break glass wherever they go. They have a very narrow, very right wing, very ideologically driven agenda that is completely incongruent with what the American people believe." If that were true, then don't you think you'd hear more of "the American people" expressing THEIR discontent? All you hear is a bunch of liberal whiners sniveling the same old songs. But the American citizenry doesn't seem to be singing along.
Someone is "breaking glass" and focused on an "incongruent, ideologically driven agenda," but from the public response, I would say it's not the Bush camp. However, this kind of prolix denial may account for the Democrats' recent history-making losses.

Woohoo!! We need to get her to talk to James Dobson and let him know about this.

I might suggest:
Unbeknown to most Americans, she says, a "fundamentalist revolution" has taken place in the United States -- a revolution comparable to those that have taken place in the Islamic world. After considering the absolute stupidity of this statement, one concludes that reading further reading is unnecessary unless one particularly enjoys fantasy.

"Moderate"?
Fat chance!
Tauscher has a 2002 ACU voting record of "8" and a lifetime voting record of"12".
That puts her only "4-5" points ahead of those other great "moderate" icons, Tom Lantos and Henry Waxman!

Megabucks Tauscher: primary challenge to Boxer and/or replacement for Feinstein if she runs for Governor?

Feinstein's always wanted to be Governor & Boxer would back her just to keep the Two Skirts from the Golden State theme intact. There is/are no "name" Republicans statewide who could beat any of the three for either governor or Senate.

No, this only goes to show how polluted the minds of most of my fellow Gay Area denizens have become from living in THE MOST LEFT LEANING ENCLAVE IN THE WESTERN WORLD! Even back in the bad old days, back when there were still enough true locals (e.g. cowboys, farmers, decendents of pioneers) around here to somewhat moderate all of the wierdos, the best we could manage in terms of GOP winners were Lefties such as Pete McCloskey and Tom Campbell. What a joke....

I'm so glad she's no longer my representative; I've been redistricted into Richard Pombo's CA 11th.
From the website of Geoff Metcalf:
I've had several requests from people trying to find the infamous quote from Representative Ellen Tauscher regarding the U.S. Constitution. Here it is: April 19, 1997, during a Town Meeting in San Ramon, California, Congresswoman Ellen Tauscher said:
"The Constitution was never meant to be the only set of laws that we follow. I had a blue dress when I was five, but I can't wear it because it doesn't fit me anymore. There are lots of things that change over time and you have a whole bunch of legislation enacted every day, every month, every year that adjusts and calibrates to the times and to the issues...what is perceived to be the best thing for the American people...and these are called laws, and, you know, I think they've been doing a pretty good job."
This Congresswoman took an oath to "preserve and protect" the very document she claims "doesn't fit anymore"......

To: MikalM
Oh, yeah, this one's a "moderate" all right! We were living in the Bay Area when Tauscher was first elected to Congress in 1996. It was impossible to turn on the radio for a traffic report without having to hear one of her annoying commercials about the paramount importance of the Right to Choose. Kalifornia has become Abortion Country, and this woman is just one of many examples of the profound sickness which results from deliberately killing off one's future.

This is nothing but hyperbole. I'm no friend of non-Islamic fundamentalists, but this kind of fearmongering is baseless. As someone who was an adult in the 1980s, I recall the left-wing themes of the times where we were told that Reagan would usher in Armegeddon, but only after women were denied the right to vote, have abortions, speak. Of course, nothing of the kind ever happened. But, it sure raised a he!! a lot of money for those pedaling fear. Of course, the Right is known for its own share of fearmongering (e.g. during the Clinton years) in order to raise bucks for "the cause."
To: MikalM
U.S. Rep. Ellen Tauscher is probably the most conservative Democrat in the Bay Area and that isnt saying much since she has a lifetime ACU rating of 12. This means the rest of them are slighty to the left of Joe Stalin. Barbara Boxer, for example, scored a whopping 2.
