The Open Line and The NorthStar Network Launch Counter-Offensive
The NorthStar Network joins our friends from The Open Line on New York Citys 98.7 KISS-FM in asking our readers to call and write the management of the MSNBC cable network to lodge a complaint over right-wing talk show host Joe Scarboroughs attack on actor, human rights activist, and our brother, Danny Glover. Scarborough has used the airwaves to initiate a campaign to have MCI fire Glover as its spokesperson due to the actors position against the war in Iraq.
This is just the latest use of the airwaves by conservatives in the media to demean the Black community. In a desperate move to increase its ratings, MSNBC has embraced conservatives who espouse racist points of view in an effort to compete with rival Fox News Channel. MSNBC is a joint venture of NBC, whose corporate parent is General Electric, and Microsoft. We encourage you to write and call to demand that MSNBCs management direct Joe Scarborough to cease his assault upon the integrity of one of our nations most conscientious artists and one of the Black communitys strongest and most progressive voices.
You can send a form letter to Erik Sorenson, President of MSNBC, at Dear Mr. Sorenson. The letter should be e-mailed to Mr. Sorenson at erik.sorenson@msnbc.com or to Jeremy Gaines, Vice President of Communications, at jeremy.gaines@msnbc.com. When you click on the letter:

You made excellent points Dengar! In my email I told them if their ratings are low, Savage should go 5 days a week, he is great! I also said their ratings would skyrocket if they hired Dennis Miller ;)
YOU decide. Here is an short excerpt form the official MSNBC TRANSCRIPT of that show, now posted at http://www.msnbc.com/news/909503.asp:
...Welcome to SCARBOROUGH COUNTRY. Im Joe Scarborough.
In a moment: An insider blows the whistle on ABC News anchor Peter Jennings and his liberal bias; plus, Scott Petersons new defense lawyer. But first: MCI wants you to buy their phone service. Unfortunately, theyve hired a spokesman who calls our president racist, blamed America for 9/11, and now he says he supports Cubas communist dictator.
(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP, MCI AD)
DANNY GLOVER, ACTOR: When it comes to your home phone, you want to make local calls.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
SCARBOROUGH (voice-over): Actor Danny Glover likes MCIs phone service. He also likes making a fool out of himself in blockbuster movies. But he doesnt like America. For years, Glover has bashed this country relentlessly. Hes called President Bush a racist. And he said that America is-quote-one of the main purveyors of violence in this world. His lethal weapons are, of course, purveyors of peace.
Now Glovers signed a petition defending Fidel Castro, a tyrant who just sentenced nearly 100 pro-democracy dissidents to rot in jail. Glover and his cohorts dont mind that kind of crackdown or the 40 years of oppression Havanas thug has inflicted on the Cuban people. Glover says America, by pressing Castro to free his country, is inflicting grave damage to the norms of understanding, debate and mediation among countries.
Right, Danny. Thats why thousands of Cubans risk their lives every year fleeing to the freedom of our shores.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP, MCI AD)
GLOVER: Do you know what unlimited means in the neighborhood?
(END VIDEO CLIP)
SCARBOROUGH: Maybe MCI wants to be Castros official long-distance carrier. If not, Im forced to wonder why they employ a man who so clearly despises America.
(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP, MCI AD)
GLOVER: Thats some fresh news.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
SCARBOROUGH: Hey, Danny, heres some fresher news. Until MCI drops you as their spokesman, they can forget about winning any customers in SCARBOROUGH COUNTRY.
(END VIDEOTAPE)
SCARBOROUGH: Now, we asked Danny Glover and his spokesperson to be on the show, but they declined to appear on SCARBOROUGH COUNTRY.
But with me now is Malik Zulu Shabazz, who serves as the head of the organization Black Lawyers For Justice.
Mr. Shabazz, I want to thank you for being on the show tonight.
And I want to ask you, do you think most MCI customers are aware of the fact that Danny Glover has labeled President Bush a racist?
MALIK ZULU SHABAZZ, BLACK LAWYERS FOR JUSTICE: Even if they have and are aware that he has used this language, he is a recognized and valuable person, particularly to the black or African American community. Many MCI customers are black people. And they would be very offended if MCI were to try to make a move on Danny Glover, who has a right to critique this government and has a right to critique its foreign policy.
SCARBOROUGH: Well, certainly, he has got a right. I agree with you. He has a right to critique that public policy. I think all Americans should get involved in the political system.
But just like African Americans are boycotting South Carolina for the flag issue, shouldnt MCI customers be able to boycott MCI because he thinks George Bush is a racist?
SHABAZZ: George Bush may very well be a racist and, in my opinion...
(LAUGHTER)
SCARBOROUGH: OK.
SHABAZZ: And, in my opinion, runs a racist administration, domestically and internationally. This new form of McCarthyism that you are advocating is very dangerous.
SCARBOROUGH: Well, I really dont understand why what Im advocating, that MCI spokespeople can actually be held accountable to the American public, is any different from African-Americans boycotting South Carolina.
I want to read to you what MCI said, though. They issued this following statement about their relationship with Danny Glover; MCI continues to uphold its longstanding corporate policy of not commenting on socioeconomic political issues, nor on the personal political views of American citizens.
And, again, thats fine. I must say, though, your comment that George Bush runs a racist administration is illuminating. Do you also agree with Mr. Glover that America was responsible for the terrorist attacks on September 11?
SHABAZZ: I would say that Americas foreign policy, which right now is extremely unilateralist, is based on intimidation, bullying, his double standard-claimed to be against a dictatorship in Iraq, but support a dictatorship in Saudi Arabia and other countries, that this country undermines the process of peace in the world and produces violence.
SCARBOROUGH: OK, but do you think Danny Glover was right, though, to say that America policy was responsible for the September 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon?
SHABAZZ: There are many-according to the polls in Europe, 70 percent of Europeans say that American foreign policy was at the root of September 11. So there are many here and around the world who believe that these aggressive and military-based foreign policies only lead to violent reprisals and that there is a better way.
SCARBOROUGH: OK, thats fine.
I want to read you something else that Mr. Glover said. And he joined other Hollywood types when he came out and took out an ad in The New York Times denouncing the war on terror. He compared our troops to terrorists. The ad said: We too mourned the thousands of innocent dead and shook our heads at terrible scenes of carnage, even as we recalled similar scenes in Baghdad, Panama City, and Vietnam.
Again, if you agree with that, fine. And, obviously, Mr. Glover-do you think most Americans understand that Mr. Glover is comparing our U.S. troops in Gulf War I with the September 11 terrorists?
SHABAZZ: Thirteen Iraqis being shot down by U.S. troops in the streets just for demonstrating, babies with their arms and their legs blown off. Now, even in Iraq, theyre in the streets chanting for America to remove the military presence.
So they are saying that they are being inflicted by American terrorism. And if you go around the world, there are many other countries that would agree. So lets be real, Joe. Lets be real that you cannot defeat terrorism by practicing terrorism.
SCARBOROUGH: Well, I agree. And I dont think were practicing terrorism. You do and Mr. Glover does.
But I want to thank you for being on tonight.
SHABAZZ: Well, we come from a long tradition of black and African-American dissent that has enlightened many around the world. And you would be wise to listen to us.
SCARBOROUGH: OK, well, I appreciate you and I have listened to you.
I appreciate you being on tonight.
Now, if youre as disturbed as I am by Danny Glovers statements and want to tell MCI, write them at: MCI World Headquarters, 2201 Loudoun County Parkway. Thats Ashburn, Virginia, 20147. You can also call them at 703-886-5600. Or go to the Web site at www.MCI.com and send them an e-mail by clicking on costumer service. I think it needs to be done. This is a disgrace...CLICK HERE for the rest of that transcript
