There are many unknowns involved with this. But one of the problems I had with the story is that Bennett didn't want to respond to the "losses" until he had a chance to digest the stories (and probably come up with the spin to downplay them).

You should try to get this published. Great!

Bennett has a serious gambling problem and no amount of rationalizing, press bashing, and Clinton diversions can excuse it. He is seen now as a hypocrite as so many of these moralizers are whether it be Jesse Jackson, Bill Clinton (carrying his Bible) or Billy Swaggert.
The IRS should look into it to see if these large amounts of money were properly accounted for. As a former drug czar, I have some concerns about someone who has a large, obsessive gambling habit. It opens him up to blackmail and other pressures.

Passionate post BUMP.

For people like me who cannot afford to go to Las Vegas and Atlantic City and instead gamble in the privacy of my own home and in the comfort of my own underwear, I'd like to see Uncle Bill become an advocate for completely legalizing and regulating online gambling.
True, he hasn't spoken against it. But for someone like him who specializes in "virtue", he has a moral obligation to try and stop his fellow conservatives from banning it.
If it's good enough for him, it's good enough for me. I won't hold my breath, however.

Doug, you are absolutely right-on-the-money. This is how the Dems will play it. At the same time, I am sorry to hear about it, and I think that he does have a problem. I hope that he can overcome the seriousness of his gambling habit. (I wouldn't anyone to spend that much money or time gambling.) I also hope that he will be honest with people, and maybe even tell us that yes, gambling can be a serious problem that can catch even the most upright of people. This is no way equates Bennett with Clinton, who was all of the things that Doug said, and who has denied all of it. Bill Bennett has been a hero, and I hope that he handles this in a heroic way.

Hey Doug... What skeletons do you have in your closet? I'm sure you're not a saint either. Since we're going to dissect a man's private life who we've all respected until now, perhaps we should look inward. You first.

Mr. Bennett has feet of clay? His apparent illness like alcoholism is curable his writings were/are a cure for many. Bill Clinton on the other hand harmed/is harming many with his addictions.
