Globalization Must Be Regulated, Says John Paul II

VATICAN CITY, MAY 2, 2003 (Zenit.org).- Citing what he sees as a lack of effective mechanisms to direct the process of globalization, John Paul II proposed "a new constitutional organization of the human family."
The Pope addressed the issue of "The Governance of Globalization" when he met today with some 70 scientists, writers, philosophers, economists, sociologists and jurists, members of the Pontifical Academy for Social Sciences. The "processes by which capital, goods, information, technology and knowledge are exchanged and circulated throughout the world today often elude the traditional mechanisms of regulatory control put in place by national governments and international agencies," the Holy Father said in his address.
"Special interests and the demands of the market frequently predominate over concern for the common good," he added. "This tends to leave the weaker members of society without adequate protection and can subject entire peoples and cultures to a formidable struggle for survival."
"Moreover, it is disturbing to witness a globalization that exacerbates the conditions of the needy, that does not sufficiently contribute to resolving situations of hunger, poverty and social inequality, that fails to safeguard the natural environment," the Pope said.
"These aspects of globalization can give rise to extreme reactions, leading to excessive nationalism, religious fanaticism and even acts of terrorism," he warned.
He continued: "All of this is far-removed from the concept of an ethically responsible globalization capable of treating all peoples as equal partners and not as passive instruments. Accordingly, there can be little doubt of the need for guidelines that will place globalization firmly at the service of authentic human development -- the development of every person and of the whole person -- in full respect of the rights and dignity of all."
The "true success of globalization will be measured by the extent that it enables every person to enjoy the basic goods of food and housing, of education and employment, of peace and social progress, of economic development and justice," the Pontiff said.
However, this "goal cannot be achieved without guidance from the international community and adequate regulation on the part of the worldwide political establishment," he continued.
Consequently, "now is the time to work together for a new constitutional organization of the human family, an organization that would be in a position to meet the new demands of a globalized world," the Pope said.
"This does not mean creating a 'global super-state,' but continuing the processes already under way to increase democratic participation and promote political transparency and accountability," he concluded.

I never said people like you should remain mum,I never said you should not be forthright and steadfast and confront the "imposter bishops". You know, those who say they are Catholic and are not;they lie.
However, you can't fight deceit nor unmask the enemy when you yourself are guilty of the same. Your latest post makes it clear that you and the "imposter bishops" are cut from the same cloth.
To: saradippity
My latest post to you was civil and your response to me was to call me an 'imposter'. That is your right.
But I will tell you one thing, your faith is weak if it cannot take debate, and your pride is strong if you must offer offense in its defense.
I will not deny that I am a Catholic while I call its teachings into question. It's presumptuous of you to ask me to do so. I am a Catholic, I will always be a Catholic no matter how much that may displease you and others like you.

"How can an evangelical Christian, saved by faith alone, be in unity with a Roman Catholic who believes in salvation by good works?"That is not what we believe. Faith alone is the way to salvation. Good works is a by product of that faith.
You know what I find interesting? From many of the Catholics that I see posting here, they keep telling me that they don't believe in salvation by works, yet I personally don't know a Catholic that will tell me that. I am married to a former Catholic. Her entire family throughout all it's branches (mom, dad, brother, aunts, uncles, neices, nephews, etc) believe in the idea of works bringing salvation. For many years (before my wife left the Catholic Church) I attended Mass with my wife, going to a total of 3 seperate Catholic Churches. It definately appeared that they were teaching a "salvation by works" message.
Many Catholics here tell me I am wrong with my understanding of the Catholic Faith, yet my understanding comes from exposure to a family of Catholics, years of attending the Catholic Church, and from reading the Catachism?
How is it I can personally know so many Catholics who are wrong? Or is it that most Catholics do buy into the salvation by works, and that there are a few who have actually read their Bible and understand that salvation is not by works, but by grace?

Of course, the notion that the True God would chose to work through a bureaucracy of sexually repressed perverts make the idea of logic and fact irrelevent.
The notion that anyone with a brain would listen to what you have to say makes the idea of logic and fact irrelevant.
Go hate Catholics elsewhere.

I don't hate Catholics. I used to be one, till I thought about it, and decided that what facts I could put my hands on, and a bit of logic meant that G-d would not work through a human bureaucracy, if He had overweening power.
So the inability for divine power to correct a supposedly divine institution indicates (to me) that its claim to divine influence are false. The only other alternative is that G-d wants pedophiles to molest children, and I don't accept that either. what do you think?
So, no special relationship for the Catholic Church indicates that its teaching is error, to me. Your mileage may differ. Sorry I didn't explain it better before.
I don't want this thread to detract from the main one.

1) Why use loaded words like 'beaureacracy?' Sounds to me like any hierarchical, organized body is a beaureacracy.
2) IMO, the idea that the Church is meant to be 1 billion little sub-churches (one for every believer and his bible) is sillier than thinking it's supposed to be one, visible body with a certain hierarchical structure.
3) I think your conclusion that the Church can't be what it says it is because it has pedophiles in it is specious at best. You're just using another buzzword of the day, no matter how true it may be. There are all kinds of sin other than buggering boys. Always has been. Instead of asking for divine control of the Church, you seem to be expecting divinity out of the hieararchy. Unfortunately, there are going to be bad eggs, some rotten. This is a Church of humans.

The point is, if G-d has a special place in his thought for the church, then he should intervene to prevent His Name from being sullied by perverts. If G-d does not, then He either has not the power, or He doesnt care about having His Name sullied by Perverts.
To disagree, you have to either find fault with the logic, or with the postulates. You are free to. The above works for me.
Bureaucracy was a great system when it was invented, but like many systems, over time it becomes complex and cumbersome. Catholicism being almost 1700 years old (no, St Paul nor Peter really established it but rather Constantine around 320CE) it is more complex and cumbersom than most.
If there was an all powerful G-d, then every little subchurch could get an email from G-d giving them their instructions for the day. It is the absense of communication from G-d that creates a niche for the bureaucrats.

Oh? Do you mean married Protestant Ministers when you say that?
What do you suppose we do with the Protestants who are "married" and still "abuse" children? Some say it's the celibacy issue of the RCC and yet many married Protestant Clergy abuse children. I guess Satan has his roots in all religions. There is a big coverup going on here with married Protestant Ministers abusing Children. What will happen to them during the Rapture?

http://www.layman.org/layman/news/news-from-pcusa/accusations-filed-against-ny-ministers.htm A 14-year-old girl in foster care is raped and impregnated by Deacon Stephen Andrews of the Advent Christian Church in Kennebunk, Maine, a trusted figure. She gives birth. Andrews gets 5 years in prison, 3 of them suspended, despite the protests of the prosecutor.
Salvation Army Captain William Douglas is convicted of molesting, sodomizing and sexually terrorizing young Indian boys in a village in British Columbia. Douglas was acquitted of similar charges in 1985; the judge said he could not accept that a minister would lie.
Born-again Delaware preacher William J. Keichline, Sr. is commended by the legislature for running Mission of Care ministry for the homeless. As a landlord he assaults and rapes a girl for 3 years starting when she is 7, threatening to evict her family if she tells. He gets eight 20 year prison terms for rape, bondage and child pornography.
Included in the study were prominent clergy and evangelists who had made names for themselves through special ministries or "good works."
The profile of the typical minister charged with molesting children: a 45-year-old man (ages ranged from 24 to 80 at the time of arrest), with 4 to 5 named victims, most often boys in their early teens.
Of all the accused, 37% involved female victims, 58% male victims, and 3.2% children of both sexes. (In 1% of the cases, the sex of the victim was not identified.)
Charges for all 190 cases involved a total of 847 victims. Most ministers, however, were suspected of molesting many other children. Conservatively, the 190 clergy had at least 4,000 other victims, for a low estimate of an average of 21 victims each. These children were not included in charges for pragmatic legal reasons, because they had been molested in other cities and times, or because the statute of limitations had been exceeded. Some estimates were anecdotal based on investigations or confessions by the molester.
Convicted ministers averaged 5 victims each, with 133 ministers molesting at least 651 named victims.
Information on the marital status of Protestants, gleaned from newspaper accounts so therefore incomplete, showed that at least 43% were married. This would dispel the idea that celibacy alone triggers ministerial child molestation. Twelve cases involved clergy charged with molesting their own children, stepchildren, adopted children or foster children.
While many see therapy as a panacea for this crime, only about a third of the convicted ministers and priests had had some kind of counseling or psychiatric evaluation, mandated or otherwise.
Typical Profile
The average age of priests charged last year with sexual abuse of children was 50 years. The range was 35 to 73 years.
The average Protestant minister was 46 years, with a similar range.
Lay Catholics and Protestants charged with sexual abuse were typically caught while in their 30's.
Many Previous Records
Shockingly, 11 out of 46 Protestant ministers charged in 1990 with criminal sexual abuse had prior convictions--almost a quarter of the cases:
All prior convictions were since 1985. Most of the men received light sentences enabling them to return to the pulpit--and continued sexual abuse of children--quickly. Churches are not only failing to check ministers' records, but in some instances are knowingly hiring convicted child molesters.
Five of the 23 nonordained Protestant church workers charged last year had had run-ins with authorities, including one discharged from the Navy for molesting boys.
In 22% of the cases, cover-ups shielding Protestant ministers were reported, in a variety of denominations. These included out-of-court settlements, defrocking a suspected child abuser but not notifying authorities about the abuse, "spiritual support," complicity, congregations applauding accused abusers, and telling reporters "The whole church knows he's not guilty," and "We're solidly behind him." "Satan can get his claws into anyone," said the friend of an Episcopalian rector accused of 73 counts of sodomizing and abusing mentally and emotionally handicapped boys before church functions.
The most blatant cover-up involved a Salvation Army minister who was permitted to keep his job and given continuing access to children after back-to-back arrests for sexually abusing children at the church.
"CHURCH EVANGELIZERS PREYED ON LOW-INCOME KIDS.
Men from a rural Baptist church known for its aggressive evangelizing of children are suspected of molesting as many as 22 boys & girls. The associate pastor, volunteer bus driver & a third church member are believed to have fondled some & raped others, ranging in age from 3 to 10, on church buses & property. Charges involving 10 victims were brought against Associate Pastor Timothy Lee Leonard, 32, of North Sharon Baptist Church near Grass Lake, & volunteer Sunday school bus driver, church deacon Mark Foeller. Three other church members are being investigated. The suspects went to low-income housing projects or trailer parks in 4 counties, telling parents they would "take the children to church & teach them about God", according to Det. Robert Fitzpatrick, Jackson Co. Men would walk up to children in their yards, coaxing them with treats to come to weekend services or summer Bible school. Leonard was relieved of church duties involving children in August, after police started investigating him when a doctor reported suspected abuse in a child with a sexual disease. He also worked as instructor & gym teacher in the North Sharon Christian School, enrolling about 65 students. "
We have to keep our kids _safe_ from Baptist pedophiles!

Troubled Newark reverend removed
Sex offender loses Shiloh Baptist post
Wednesday, May 07, 2003
BY WILLIAM KLEINKNECHT
Star-Ledger Staff
A convicted sex offender from Florida who was hired as pastor of Newark's Shiloh Baptist Church has been removed from the position, a state official said yesterday.
Joseph Delmar, spokesman for the state Division of Youth and Family Services, said the church informed the agency that its leaders voted Thursday to remove the Rev. Chavalis T. Williams as pastor.
DYFS was involved because Williams, as pastor, was a board member of Shiloh Rainbow Academy, the church's day care center. The agency had warned the academy that Williams could not be allowed on the day care's premises.
"We have been informed by Shiloh that the Rev. Williams is no longer employed by the church," Delmar said. "Our concerns for the safety of the children have been met."
A number of church members said John Sabb, chairman of the church's board of deacons, informed the congregation of Williams' removal at a special meeting Monday night.
Sabb declined to comment.
In 1999, Williams, then known as Chavalis Bonsell, pleaded guilty to arranging for two teenagers to have sex in front of him and others while working at a facility for troubled teens in Jacksonville, Fla. At the time of his arrest, he was on probation after pleading guilty to an earlier charge of beating his wife.
After pleading guilty to charges of child abuse and using children in a sexual performance, Williams was sentenced to six months in jail and 30 months of probation.
Shiloh's leadership knew he was a registered sex offender in Florida and hired him in mid-March, provoking outrage among some members of the congregation. Many members of the church pressed the leadership to rescind his $45,000 annual contract.
Since being hired, Williams commuted from Florida and had only been at the church on two or three occasions, relying on associate ministers for Sunday sermons. He told the congregation he was planning to relocate to New Jersey.
Williams previously declined repeated requests for a comment on his past and could not be reached yesterday.
The controversy over Williams' pastorship divided the once close-knit church, which is on Davenport Avenue in the city's North Ward and will soon be celebrating its 100th anniversary.
The church's leadership and many members of the congregation strongly supported Williams, a 27-year-old known for his inspiring sermons. Leaders of the church were irate that some members had leaked his past to the media.
But another group felt the church had been taken in by a con artist. They said Williams denied that he was a registered sex offender in Florida when he was confronted by church members and appeared to be trying to collect his pay as pastor without living in New Jersey.
Why weren't these stories given national press coverage? Why is there a coverup of Christian pedophile ministers' crimes against America's children???

Just because the Pope isn't a free-market purist automatically makes him a socialist?... The way globalization has been going has not been completely good morally. Actually, my complaint about the Pope's "Globalization Must Be Regulated" comment is more basic:
Just what, pray tell, is "globalization"? How, in your opinion, has it "been going"? And, whatever it is exactly, how does one "regulate" it?
From the article:
Citing what he sees as a lack of effective mechanisms to direct the process of globalization,
What "process of globalization"? What the hell does that MEAN? International airline flights? The Internet? What the heck is he talking about?
John Paul II proposed "a new constitutional organization of the human family."
Meaning..? US Constitution is hereby cancelled?
The Pope addressed the issue of "The Governance of Globalization"
How does one "govern globalization" if one can't define it?
The "processes by which capital, goods, information, technology and knowledge are exchanged and circulated throughout the world today often elude the traditional mechanisms of regulatory control put in place by national governments and international agencies,"
Ah, finally, a meaty comment. What he's saying in English: black markets and tax shelters are becoming easier. Well, in some cases, this might be bad; in other cases, good. It's not exactly a clear-cut moral issue, now, is it? If people in North Korea could find a way to exchange and circulate FOOD which would "elude" the "traditional mechanisms of regulatory control put in place by" their government, wouldn't that be a WONDERFUL THING?
"Special interests and the demands of the market frequently predominate over concern for the common good," he added. "This tends to leave the weaker members of society without adequate protection and can subject entire peoples and cultures to a formidable struggle for survival."
Mushy gibberish lacking any precise meaning. People will interpret this however they want.
"Moreover, it is disturbing to witness a globalization that exacerbates the conditions of the needy,
How does it do that exactly? How are the conditions of the needy "exacerbated" by "globalization"? Is that really happening?
that does not sufficiently contribute to resolving situations of hunger, poverty and social inequality,
How is "globalization" making these things worse? Couldn't it, in fact, be making them better than they'd otherwise be (without "globalization")? Sure it could! (After all, "globalization" DOESN'T MEAN ANYTHING!)
"These aspects of globalization
Circular definition. He's listed some bad things. Now he's calling them "aspects of globalization", and then, blaming "globalization" for the bad things. A shorter way to say this would be just to come clean and replace the word "globalization" with "Satan"
"All of this is far-removed from the concept of an ethically responsible globalization
Ok so now the "globalization" ought to be "ethically responsible". Well sure I'll go with that. (After all, it doesn't even exist in the first place, why not make it "ethically responsible" then.)
Accordingly, there can be little doubt of the need for guidelines that will place globalization firmly at the service of authentic human development
Look, I'm all for "globalization" being at the service of authentic human development. Why not? I'll go you one further: jimypooquantegenerism ought to be at the service of authentic human development. What's that? You want to know what "jimypooquantegenerism"? Why should that matter? Whatever it is, it oughta be at the service of human development, right? Anyway, I'll give you a precise definition of "jimypooquantegenerism" as soon as you give me a precise definition of "globalization". (I won't hold my breath.)
The "true success of globalization will be measured by the extent that it enables every person to enjoy the basic goods of food and housing, of education and employment, of peace and social progress, of economic development and justice,"
Uh, but how can it do any of these things if people keep taking all of their complaints about the world and then defining "globalization" to be the cause of those complaints?
However, this "goal cannot be achieved without guidance from the international community and adequate regulation on the part of the worldwide political establishment," he continued.
Why not?
Consequently, "now is the time to work together for a new constitutional organization of the human family, an organization that would be in a position to meet the new demands of a globalized world," the Pope said.
Thanks for the invitation Pope, but we politely decline.
Look, there may indeed be some valid moral comments from the Pope in these remarks but to say that "Globalization Must Be Regulated" is just jibberish and buzzwords. Perhaps they mean something to the Pope and perhaps they mean something to you, but to me, he may as well be speaking Latin. What's worse, and more to the point, is that to many influential people, these jibberish buzzwords may sound like they give blanket endorsement of various socialist experiments. Whether the Pope knows this will be the effect of his words, or not.
And that, in the end, is what I think people are picking up on and complaining about.
To: uncbuck
Materialism is an evil that does pervade our society, and the Pope has a duty to warn and remind us about it. Okay but instead this Pope decided to warn us about something called "globalization", and said it should be "regulated".
Not the same thing.
Unless and until someone adequately defines "globalization". Frankly I don't know what the heck it is supposed to mean.
To: B-Chan
The Pope's message is a plea for capitalism with a human face, No, the Pope's message is a convoluted mess of jibberish and buzzwords involving some vague notion called "globalization". You may have interpreted all that to mean "capitalism with a human face", and I congratulate you on that skillful reading, but it's not clear how your interpretation relates to the original text, which again is about "globalization".
Whatever the heck that is.
The free market produces more wealth for more people than any other economic system every conceived, but to say that there should be no restrictions on economic activity is..
Who's saying that? Is that what you think "globalization" is - no restrictions on economic activity? Is that what you think the Pope thinks "globalization" is? Are you sure?
To: Pyro7480
Pyro, don't let these people get to you, anyone who can bash a fellow Christian (the Pope) the way some so-called Christians do on the Free Republic and everywhere else, are NOT Christians themselves, you see on this thread the way one so-called Christian is making fun of a brother human being, a holy man despite what religion he is, and his Parkinson's Disease--you have Satans here who "claim" to be Christians. Believe me, after hearing some on this Free Republic, I will never think of Protestants the same again, they are setting a terrible example for what their religion stands. Now I know why there are so few Protestant hospitals in this country since they may help an infirmed man, of a different religious faith, with his Parkinson's Disease. What you hear on the FR is only a small portion of what is going on in the world.
The Catholic Church is against Communism and Socialism, the deadly plague that is creeping into the very fibers of human society and leading it on to the verge of destruction, don't let Satan's heroes say otherwise. Make sure the socialists (and Satanists who make fun of People with Parkinsons) do not take over; they are working from within and outside the church and are part of the media and will stop at nothing from destroying the Church.
