No, I'm not making this up. I was visiting in the Oxford area last week, and a friend showed me the article. Unfortunately, I don't have access to a scanner, and the section of the paper it appeared in is not web-posted. However, you can contact the Oxford Eagle to confirm its publication (662) 234-4331 or at oxfordtown@oxfordeagle.com. The editor of that section of the paper is Rebecca Lauck Cleary. Unfortunately, I don't have contact info for the free-lancer who conducted the interview and wrote the article. I did fax a copy to the Fort Drum public affairs office.

In the words of another Army alum, Sergeant Forrest Gump, "stupid is as stupid does." Something tells me Private Freeland is about to get a quick lesson in proper military conduct....

Freeland told the interviewer that she joined the Army in 2001 because "I thought four years of maturity and discipline would be a good thing."

I'd say it didn't "take," hon.

"she "loathes" the President's decision "... "moronic things Bush does "
Gee, I'd have to give her a pass on these.
She's contemptuous of his actions- not of him.

OTOH if the military decides differently it's no biggie to me.

"No matter what moronic things Bush does or how much I don't agree, he's my commander-in-chief, and I'll go," she said.

Me thinks that the only thing this private will be going to is the brig and now is not soon enough. It is obvious that she is bucking for an exit pass. Let's make sure that it's dishonorable and with 90 days in the brig to start with. Time to make an example out of this college drop out.

A few points for Private (and since she's already in the basement, I'm not sure what they can bust her to, but I'm sure she's about to find out) Freeland:

1. Yeah, I always go to E-1s who flunked out of college for insightful geopolitical analysis. Sit the &*^% down, and shut the *&^% up. Basic training and AIT do not qualify you to pontificate on anything.

2. You apparently slept through that basic training class on the Uniform Code of Military Justice. You are about to get a refresher course.

3. As a military member, you are not entitled to any constitutional rights. Period. You do not have freedom of speech. You are not free from unreasonable searches of you or your possessions. You do not have the right to pursue happiness - you may in fact be ordered to undertake actions, knowing with full certainty those actions would result in your death - and you have no recourse but to obey those orders. You may not run for office, or take part in a partisan political campaign. Suck it up, cupcake.

There's a reason this twit is still a Private. There's one loudmouthed malcontent in every unit, and my guess is she's it.

Okay, fine...now we have a 21-year old PFC and a female to boot criticizing the Commander in Chief.

This sounds like a little girlie looking for a way to get out of the mean ol' Army and back home to the Bayou...and maybe get some sympathy and bucks along the way.

Should be terminated for violating military rules. When liberals whine that free speech is being violated, we should once again lecture them (as if they were children) about the nature of free speech and how organizations can expect that certain standards are met as an obligation of your employment.

She's enlisted. She can say what she wants as long as she follows orders.

"I thought four years of maturity and discipline would be a good thing."

I wonder if fighting a war ever crossed her mind as a reason, or certainly a consequence, of joining my Army!

You guys who want to hang her are completely out of line. Bush is not so fragile that he would find the words of a E-1 a threat to his manhood like Clinton would.

If she is prosecuted then three-quarters of the military would have had to have been prosecuted during the Clinton years.

As an enlisted, she is granted far more leeway in voicing "contemptuous words" than an officer. An officer is expected to know better. No enlisted has ever been punished for violating the "contemptuous words" directive -- whereas senior officers have.

Give her a few years and she will come around. If she stays in the military, in about 10 years she will be a neocon FReeper wondering how she could have thought such stuff when she was younger.

I think it is funny that some FReepers thought it was cool when people spoke up in the ranks against Klintoon but find it hard to imagine a soldier would speak up against Bush.

All requests for interviews of military personnel are supposed to go through the local Public Affairs Officer. She could be taken to NJP for violating command policy (disobeying lawful order)

It remains unclear whether Freeland will be punished....

Hey, give her a break. She received punishment enough when her mental ability met her education.

Obviously the maturity hasn't yet kicked in. So kick her OUT. There should be no deal. Dishonorable. Let her feel the sting for a few years. Actually, she could probably get a hefty salary from some leftie company.
