Dem Fund-Raiser Killed in Murder-Suicide

DAVIE, Fla. (AP) - A prominent Democratic fund raiser and his business partner were found shot to death Tuesday in a banquet hall they owned, police said.

Jerome Berlin and his business partner, Michael Pecora, were found dead in a locked office on the second floor of the Signature Grand banquet hall in Davie, police said. Police believe the deaths were a murder-suicide.

An employee reported overhearing an argument, then three gunshots in the office.

At the same time, about 1,200 eighth-grade students were attending an African Heritage Forum on the banquet hall's first floor.

Berlin was a Miami businessman who raised millions of dollars for political candidates over the years.

Dating back to 1997, Berlin aided such well-known Democratic senators as Joe Lieberman of Connecticut, Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York, Tom Daschle of South Dakota and Bill Nelson of Florida, according to Federal Election Commission fund-raising records.

He was acquitted in 1991 of federal charges that he and another lawyer conspired to defraud a securities investment firm in 1985.

Sen. Bob Graham, D-Florida, sent his condolences to Berlin's family.

``Jerry was a personal friend and active supporter. Like all who knew him, I am stunned by this tragedy,'' Graham said in a statement.

Gee, I must be slipping. It didn't occur to me, until you mentioned it, then it hit me: the extreme frequency with which Bill and Hillary's friends commit suicide and meet with accidents.
