The first season of PBS's "American Family," in which Edward James Olmos plays the conservative patriarch of a Hispanic Los Angeles family, comes out on DVD today.

But it's his role as another patriarch that's bound to get TV viewers in their 30s and 40s talking. Olmos is filming Sci Fi Channel's miniseries remake of the late '70s TV show "Battlestar Galactica." Olmos takes over the role of Commander Adama, originally played by the late Lorne Greene.

I am still furious about SCIFI's cowardly cancellation of Farscape.

As bad as that was it was nothing compared to their cancellation of Mystery Science Theater 3000. There's an entire circle of Hell reserved for Barry Diller just for that one action.

You really should go to a Science Fiction convention. Don't talk to anyone. Just pretend you are a tourist in a strange foreign land and don't speak the same language.

Avoid the anime fans (and especially the "furries"). They are really strange. ;-)

It's right next to Bonnie Hammer's. She gave a really lame-a$$ed excuse for axing Farscape. Frell her!

At least Stargate SG1 is on for another season. As for the worst SCIFI it has to be Andromeda. The show went from good to worse in a course of 3 seasons.

I remember going to a local "Trek" event about three years ago down in Southwest Broward at BCC South. See, my local anime club got tapped to do the anime screening room at the daylong event. We were, ostensibly, members of the staff. We were told before the convention that we could have some of the donuts, as well. We should have known better than to go in and help ourselves to some of the staff's donuts. One middle aged gentleman walks in dressed like Picard and dresses us down for eating some of the freaking donuts!

This disturbed you? You obviously haven't met the stranger elements of anime fandom. A grown man dressed like Sailor Moon. Now that's creepy. And don't even get me started on furries and their anitomically correct plush dolls. Heck, the anime fans are even freaky in Tokyo. The only place I ever ran into a Japanese person badly in need of a bath was in an anime shop.

Yes, I realize there are normal anime fans. :-)

In the new version, Olmos said, it's impossible to tell Cylons from humans

and it saves lots of money on costumes.

You must have a loose definition of normal. I know lots of anime fans, none of them are normal, some of them I would trust alone with a child but normal just ain't happening in that crowd.

Somebody needs to explain to me the Farscape thing.

Chick. With. Gun.

Everybody talked with stupid accents and couldn't be understood half the time,

I didn't notice any accents (stupid or otherwise) and had no trouble understanding them.

Who thinks Starship Troopers isn't fun to watch? String them up, citizen!

Troopers was fun to watch, but those of us who read the book realize how much better it could have been.

"DS9 rocked"

What made me so angry about the DS9 view of the future was the blatant loss of individual liberties. You ever see how that cop who was the shape shifter...ODO? How he used to react to the presence of a privately held weapon? Yeah this series was a poster child for the ugliest aspects of a NEWER New World Order.

The first time I saw Troopers I sat there with my mouth hanging open in shock, thinking "why, oh why..."

Next time I had a couple of beers and relaxed. I enjoyed the hell out of it. 1 hot chick with a gun, 1 hot chick as damsel in distress, cool combat scenes, enough camp to house the entire 4th division.

It's all a matter of expectations, I suppose. I'd love to see it done straight sometime though.

Oh man, your tagline and the conversation made me run and get "The Past Through Tomorrow" to remember the title "If this goes on --". I think that'd be a great movie. And Hollywood would love it - as straight an anti-religious peice as you'll get from Heinlein, with plenty of sex and violence.

Camp can work really well with SF. Didja see "Evolution" (figuring out how to work "Play that Funky Music" by Wild Cherry into an SF movie was a great bonus touch).

Reality TV is bottom of the barrel, Soap Operas and Daytime Talkshows are a notch above it. It actually is making the stupid people in this country, more dumber. Now that's scary. Reality TV Shows are a hazard to one's mental health.

I loath stupid shows that have no point to this except to be stupid in a non-funny way. And I don't find bringing people pain to be funny.

It is sad to say, but except for the movie channels (which I don't have) the only good stuff that comes on TV right now is the anime that is on the Cartoon Network.
