WHO'S HOT....
1. TIM ROBBINS SARANDON
Among America's leftist media glitterati, washed-up movie star, Tim Robbins Sarandon, is hot, hot, hot.
You see, the glitterati are very proud of Robbins-Sarandon and his affirmation of their core American values. In an amazingly overwrought recent speech before the National Press Club, Mr. Susan Sarandon complained about the unjust denial of the right to free speech to such leading American political luminaries as Janeane Garafola, The Dixie Chicks and, er, Tim Robbins-Sarandon -- all of whom made fools of themselves opposing the war in Iraq, loudly predicting an apocalyptic disaster consisting of trillions of Iraqi civilian casualties, millions of uprisings in the Arab street, and the decimation of the American military in the urban 'quagmire' of Baghdad.
Per usual, these three spokespersons for the Tinseltown 'peace-at-any-price' crowd got it all wrong and were publically humiliated by the ensuing events in Iraq. They also watched gloomily as their star stature dimmed in the eyes of the American ticket-buying public, and as they turned into objects of contempt for their ill-chosen remarks. In other words, they suddenly realized that they are on the brink of being unemployable in the crass, bottom-line business of Tinseltown entertainment.
After all, movie producers aren't interested in hiring Janeane Garafola and Tim Robbins-Sarandon if no-one is going to show up at their movies. And record executives are getting nervous about the 40% drop in sales of Dixie Chick CDs, not to mention the tepid response to their upcoming cross-country concert tour.
And that insisted Tim Robbins isn't fair and isn't what America is about. The American public and American show-biz moguls have no businesss excercising their free choices in the market place. That's an unjust "intimidation" of the free speech rights of all the Hollywood airheads who opened their big mouths to criticize and run down the very nation that made them rich and famous. And since when have there been consequences for the actions of the privileged few who comprise the Hollywood elite? Being special people, they're used to doing and saying whatever they want without any consequences.
Now they're being held accountable by the public for their shrill and unpatriotic pronouncements. Why it's all downright UnAmerican!
Here's a solution, Tim. Book a one-way ticket to Paris, Oslo or Havana as soon as you can. See how well you and Susan fare under the kind of socialized economic system you obviously champion. And then when you've run out of money to pay for all the big homes, fine wines, fine foods, servants and limousines you've become accustomed to, come on back home and say, "Mea culpa!"
2. THE DIXIE CHICKS'
Talk about a long fifteen minutes. The scurrilous Dixie Chicks (or as we prefer to call them, the 'Dixie Blixes') just can't seem to keep out of the news.
The cluckheads are still reeling from a 40% plunge in the sale of their CDs, as well as middling ticket sales for their latest cross-country concert tour -- in response to the ill-chosen criticism of President George W. Bush and America's military campaign to oust Saddam Hussein by the group's lead big mouth, Natalie Maines. So the group turned up on an ABC-TV interview with Diane Sawyer last week, to whine and sob about how hard-done-by they've been by evil American country & western music fans who have violated the Dixie Blixes' rights by refusing to purchase Dixie Chicks albums.
What a terrible and frightening country America is, the members of the group told Diane. Only ignorant and intolerant Americans would take umbrage at one of the United State's leading foreign-policy specialists, Natalie Maines, pandering to foreign audiences with disparaging remarks about America's President and condemning American foreign policy as immoral and evil. How dare other Americans make use of their own right to free speech to criticize the pronouncements of their betters -- insightful, morally superior citizens of the world such as the Dixie Blixes? And how dare these McCarthyites refuse to purchase Dixie Chicks albums or tickets to Dixie Chicks concerts? This would never happen in Cuba or The Palestine Authority!
Oh, puleez! How about giving it a rest, birdbrains? It's time to face reality. Your band is toast in the Country & Western music world, no matter how much you sob and whine before the TV cameras.
Maybe you can get a gig playing at Tim Robbin's next Democratic Party fund-raising gala in L.A.
WHO'S NOT....
1. TORONTO MAYOR MEL LASTMAN (THE CZAR OF SARS)
Oh, dear. As if the whole SARS scare weren't doing enough to tarnish Toronto's reputation, now the city has to deal with the world being let in on its most embarrassing secret: its semi-crazed, incoherent mayor.
Every time Mel appears on television to talk about the current SARS outbreak in his city, he proceeds to make a complete fool of himself. And Torontonians are cringing.
Lastman popped up on CNN and told host Aaron Brown he didn't know what the World Health Organization was, after they issued an advisory against travel to Toronto.
"I don't know who this group is," Maniacal Mel ranted. "I've never heard of them before. I've never seen them before."
We're not exactly big fans of the WHO either, but we do find it a little disturbing that the mayor of a major North American city knows no more about this high profile UN agency than that it is "located somewhere in Geneva." It was a sad showing.
But at least the gaffes have gotten Lastman exposure on Comedy Central's The Daily Show. "You know, I was thinking about going to Toronto," host Jon Stewart said on Thursday's episode, "but I hear the mayor's kind of a dick."
That'll give tourism a boost......
