WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democratic Sen. Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut has asked the Justice Department (news - web sites) and FBI (news - web sites) to investigate whether an accused spy may have illegally funneled Chinese government money into Republican coffers in the 1990s, The Washington Post said on Sunday.
The Post report cited a letter that Lieberman, a leading Democratic candidate for president, sent on Friday to the Justice Department about Katrina M. Leung, recently arrested on charges she was a double agent who passed classified information to China.
Leung was a well-known fund-raiser for Republicans in Southern California and she and her husband have contributed $27,000 to national Republican causes since 1992, the Post said.
It said Lieberman hopes to renew the government's inquiry into alleged attempts by China to influence the 1996 elections, this time with the focus on a prominent Republican fund-raiser. But the report noted Lieberman's request for a campaign finance investigation may also call attention to Chinese fund-raising scandals that dogged Democrats during the former Clinton administration.
In a letter to Attorney General John Ashcroft (news - web sites) and FBI Director Robert Mueller, Lieberman said a previous Republican majority on the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee (news - web sites) "chose to focus its investigation almost entirely on individuals who had raised or contributed money to the Democratic presidential campaign of 1996," the Post said.
Lieberman said the possibility a foreign government might have illegally influenced U.S. political campaigning was "a truly troubling one, and any evidence that may have occurred must be vigilantly investigated and pursued."
The Post cited a Justice Department spokeswoman as saying that all matters regarding Leung were under review, but adding, "I can't say what the review would encompass."

Sure.
But first, let's look into ALL the Chinese money coming into the US (DNC) coffers since the ... 1980's Arkansas governor campaigns maybe.

Actually, I'd like to see an expose on any political skunks who are taking Chinese money. I'm very bipartisan on this issue. But I don't think the Beltway will cooperate.
The GOP will continue to keep silent about the Dim's Chinese money as long as LIEberman doesn't get too serious about pursuing this. Same old, same old.
One does have to wonder if some documents about Saddam's payoffs to Dims might be expected to surface shortly. This might be a pre-emptory strike at the GOP over a Saddam payoff to the usual DNC suspects. Coming from LIEberman, that would be natural since he's unilaterally declared himself de facto party leader.

Interestingly, she was working as an agent of Chicoms ALL during the Dumocrat administration. She used a cover as a Rep activist, YET it wasn't until a Republican President that she is arrested, HUMMMMMM
As I have said many times before. Bush admistration has spent most of it's time cleaning up the mess the evil Dums have made.

Joe probably knows that all the investigation done by Reno and fedayeen of the Clintons was destroyed.
They learned from Nixon don't save anything that can incriminate you.
Most important of all do not allow non-liberals on that Circuit Court in DC.

This is an attempt to change history. LIEberman wishes to associate the DNC/Clinton-Gore Chinagate scandal with Bush administration in the public mind, rather than with the Clinton administration where it belongs.
The excommunicated founder of the Clintonista Third Way movement wants to be president. He, like the rest of the Democrats, has no campaign platform because they've lied to the public about their motives for so long, as well as having been firmly established as crooks in the public mind.
The Democrat solution to this problem : lie to the public some more. Doesn't matter whether Leiberman's campaign accusation turns out to be true or not. His only goal here is to make the public decide that Republicans are no more honest than Democrats after all. Confusion has always been a tool of Socialist dictators.
Even if the story DOES turn out to be true, $25,000 bucks in donations over a decade isn't a molecule in the bucket compared to hundreds of thousands, perhaps even MILLIONS that China used to buy Leiberman's party.

Accused Spy's Link To GOP Is Issue
Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman (Conn.), a leading Democratic candidate for president, has asked the Justice Department and FBI to investigate whether an accused spy may have illegally funneled Chinese government money into Republican coffers in the 1990s, according to a letter he sent Friday.
Katrina M. Leung, 49, recently jailed on charges that she was a "double agent" who passed classified information to the People's Republic of China, was a well-known political fundraiser for Republicans in Southern California. She and her husband have contributed $27,000 to national GOP causes since 1992.
By calling for a campaign finance investigation of Leung, Lieberman hopes to renew the government's inquiry into alleged attempts by China to influence the 1996 elections, this time with the focus on a prominent Republican fundraiser.
But the request also calls more attention to the Chinese fundraising scandals that dogged Democrats during the Clinton-Gore administration. No other prominent Democrat has made an issue of Leung's GOP connections since she was arrested April 9, and a campaign director for a rival candidate declined to comment yesterday.
