Channel-surfing looking for news, and caught the tail-end of this on a local PBS station. The ingenuity of Man -- in food that which doesn't kill you strengthens you. Or at least keeps you awake.

There are a group of interesting stories about the foods we eat at the link above; something for a slow day. Enjoy.

Burt Wolf! Wasn't he on CNN for years?

Haven't seen him in a dog's age.

Love foodees like Wolf, Anthony Bourdain, Chan, Julia...

Even Emeril.

Also to be remembered is J.S. Bach's "Coffee Cantata".

Starbucks also introduced Americans to the modern coffeehouse.

Give me Reienzi's in NYC any time.(Is it still there?)
I was there the year bob dylan played electric at Newport,
that dates me I know.
Now THAT was a coffee house.
Great music, chess, stimulating conversation, stay as long as you like, great deserts, and none of this overroasted burnt bean gunk from starbucks.

A good cup (OK, who am I kidding?) or 6 cups of coffee really make the morning better.

This article overlooks completely the history of coffee in New Orleans. The importation, roasting and brewing of coffee in that city dates back at least 200 years (and probably longer). South Louisiana still roasts (and consumes) some of the best coffee in the world---Starbucks is horse urine by comparison.

Thanks. Long but well worth the read. I heard Pendergrast on C-SPAN (radio) Book Notes about 2 years ago talking about this book. It was fascinating.

Became addicted to sweet Arab coffee in grad school. Quite a bit of research was accomplished thanks to those beans!

Check out the book "Uncommon Grounds" by Pendergast at your local library or bookstore for a more comprehensive history. It is both highly entertaining and informative as well.

My favorite coffee: Cafe Britt from Costa Rica

I have a coffe plant growing in my living room. It makes a wonderful house plant and despite my best efforts I have yet to kill it.

BTTT

IIRC, "Joe" refers to Josephus Daniel, Secretary of the Navy, who stopped the daily allotment of rum.

BTW, I prefer the French Press method - I like the little gritty bits.
