How un-freaking-believably stupidly the Turks are behaving. The Turks could be taking this opportunity to develop some decent relations with Iraq and its Kurds. This time when Iraqi Kurds are focused on the future rather than the past (that attitude alone rare enough in the region), are full of pride in what they have accomplished thus far, and are (for the most part) anxious to demonstrate that they can participate in a civil society, provides a unique opportunity for improvements in relations that could have very large positive effects for Turkish trade and for Turkish security.

On the security front, the terrorists operating in Turkey have never had widespread support from Northen Iraq, and are despised, or at least avoided as troublemakers, by most Iraqi Kurds. Not that the Turks are beloved by Iraqi Kurds. The opposite is the case. But why the Turks want to go out of their way to create an adversarial relationship is beyond me.

It seems, however, to be of a piece with the dour, self-defeating pessimism that has colored their attitude to the war in general. It's like the country is being run by Jimmy Carter. Malaise rules. The Turks seem so certain that every new development will bring deepening disaster, that they are perversely advancing their self-fulfilling prophecies.

Turkish military morale and strength is built on terror and the myth that was developed during the Cold war. Turks are good at massacreing women and children, not much else.
