I need some Freeper expertise. There is a possibility I may be offered a position in western Virginia. As we homeschool, we have done some research about the existing Virginia laws regarding homeschool reporting and responsibilities of parents and school officisls.
Are there any western Virginia Freepers who homeschool that can give me a breakdown on ease of homeschooling there and the process? I understand that this can vary from district to district. The town in question is Grundy, near TN and KY.
Thanks in Advance!

West Virginia has some of the poorest public schools in the Nation. Your decision to homeschool is a good one. Contact the state board of education in WV to get the goods on homeschooling. You may need to provide lesson plans and other information to homeschool.
Best of luck!

Sorry, I misread. I don't know about Virginia, but I would give the same advice about contacting the Board of Education.

This is anecdotal but...When I worked in a print shop (through college) a man, who took his childern out of the government school, came in to copy his college diploma. He said that all one needs is a college diploma to homeschool in the Old Dominion. I also recall that if you claim you are homeschooling for religous reasons, the state will acceed. By the way (I live in Richmond) I didn't know there were jobs to be had in South Western Virginia:).

Man have you
been to Grundy yet? That's a step back in time!
Don't know about that region, but I think the Virginia laws regarding home school are fairly reasonable. My wife teaches in a home school academy in Richmond. Most of her students seem pretty much on top of things.
Grundy isn't too far from where I grew up. Take your own entertainment! Although when the Coalfield Expressway through there is complete, there will be more development.

One of my neighbors was successfully homeschoolng in Manassas.

Nope--I haven't been there yet. On the map, though, it look seriously isolated. I actually think that's a Good Thing, though. :)

Man have you been to Grundy yet? That's a step back in time! Maybe he is taking that empty teaching position at Appalachian Law College.

Well, he had to be pretty close, unless your a coal miner, there ain't a lot more out there.
It's pretty remote, but there's some pretty country around there. You're not far from Breaks Interstate State Park which is shared by KY and VA. But you're talking culture shock coming from Ohio.
To: Corin Stormhands
Good. I need some pretty country to ride my motorcycle in.

Then you should be a happy boy. It's really hilly there.

I refuse to believe there is a computer in Grundy. Maybe a calculator. It's very pretty and very poor. You will be shocked at how anyone can get that trailer onto that ledge.

You will be shocked at how anyone can get that trailer onto that ledge. I refuse to believe they towed those trailers up there. I prefer to believe that they built them, piece by piece, on the ledge.....
Seriously, though, that is gorgeous country. I grew up in Missouri, and have lived in Ohio for a decade or so. The difference in scenery is tremendous.

A friend of mine's father grew up in West Virginia. He once dated a young lady from Grundy. On his second visit, after he dropped the young lady off, he was run off the road on the way out of town by a group of locals. He was told "Grundy girls date Grundy boys. You come back here, and we'll kill you."
He believed them.

Do not contact state or local officials! Contact hslda.org and check out their website. There is a map on the upper right-hand side of the page. Click on it and you will be taken to a list of states. Click on West Virginia and you will get the information you need, from state laws to support groups.
West Virginia recently changed their law to benefit home schoolers.
