ITHACA -- Central New York is not known for an abundance of sunshine, especially during the winter, when the dominant tone of the weather is steel-gray with low hanging clouds.
It's a difficult environment for solar energy panels, such as the ones that adorn the roof of the Tompkins County Public Library.

According to the Environmental Impact Statement on the construction project, adding enough solar panels to compensate for the loss in sunlight could cost up to $370,000. Typical liberal/Ithaca mentality: something doesn't work. So throw more money at it.
Ithaca is the City of Evil.

A question: why is Ithaca more evil than say, Amherst, Masschusetts, or Berkeley, California?

Because Ithac voted about twice as much for Nader than Bush. That IS bad.

She said that when it comes to environmental concerns, there needs to be "a really long time frame," to consider the benefits. In a "really long time frame," we are all dead. High above Cayuga's waters, there's an awful smell....

Wouldn't giant mirrors to deflect the sunlight onto the solar panels be cheaper?

"... the panels, which
cost county taxpayers $550,000, would be almost totally obscured by shadow...."
Wasn't there also a Federal subsidy for this project, on the order of $1,000,000?

See? Words do mean things.

The solution is simple, build a taller library.

Ithaca is less cosmopolitan than the two other nasty bergs you list, and far more isolated, making it that much more oppressive.

Tompkins County board meeting February 15, 2000 "The proposal reviewed was prepared by Powerlight Corporation of California, and would cost $1,006,539. There are two sources of grants: (1) Powerlight Corporation - the source of funding is a federal grant for proliferating photovoltaics; and (2) NYSERDA grant. The grants total $455,514, bringing the net cost to the County to $551,025. He described the details of the system and warranty information. He also reviewed the financial analysis and net present value analysis. "
The County money came out of their share of the tobacco settlement.

Also:
The September 2002 issue of American Enterprise had an article about how the nations colleges are not merely overrun by liberals, but that there are so many liberals on campus that conservatives are virtually non-existent.
And one of the worst offenders? You guessed it: Cornell University (no wonder they call it the Big Red), of which only approximately three percent of its professors are republican or conservative. And when you consider that the study counted libertarians as conservative, you realize that the number could actually be even lower.
How bad is three percent compared to other colleges of note? Lets put it this way: not only is it lower than Harvard (recently in the news for ITS skewed faculty population), but is even lower than Berkeley, long considered the most liberal campus anywhere in America!
Even the Ithaca Times has picked up on the no Republicans welcome in Ithaca vibe. In their recent Welcome to Ithaca issue they advised newcomers: If you are Republican, get a thick skin. Ithaca has been liberal for about as long as anyone can remember, and
Republicans usually have a hard time here.

Because Ithac voted about twice as much for Nader than Bush. On the other hand...one could argue that Nader votes would otherwise have gone to Gore -- and that if enough Nader votes had gone to Gore that Gore would have won. Thus -- Nader voters inadvertantly elected Bush.

There are cases where you are not allowed to just "block the sun" of a neighbor's property. Should solar cells become more used, this "sun easment" issue will become more and more important.
