Islamic law, eh?

I wonder what this means for Iraq's sizeable Christian minority? What will it mean for Iraq's neighbors and the US? There has been a general consensus on this board that Iraq will embrace democracy. It won't.

What is more likely is an '80s-style Iranian theocracy where Islamic law is paramount.

One war may be ending. Another is just beginning.

Sharia Law is the source of most of the Middle-East's misery. Had America and Britain not invested lives and resources toward freeing this rabble I'd say they deserve to rot.

Baghdad's self proclaimed Mayor promises Islamic law

After all the coalition soldiers who gave their lives for this war, the Church of Satanic versus will reap the rewards.

This is an outrage!

I think the US was ill prepared to take over a country who's entire civil and military administration collapsed. This opens avenues to such radical elements, which is real danger, as these clerics have a grip on all these poor muslim smacks that have to report for Sunday brainwashing at the mosque.

Why is there no mayor of Bagdad appointed by the US? To allow this vacuum will not be helpful.

This is scary. Chalaby looks pretty bad to me, too. Is Iraq going to switch one form of dictatorship to another? The fact that they can't separate theocracy from politics is a tragedy. Why are the citizens so vulnerable to the 'cult mentality'?

A longtime Iraqi exile who has proclaimed himself in charge of Baghdad

This is very wierd. I expect that the next year or so will be full of confusing, I'm watching and trying not to over react to any one thing.

The interum mayor is a woman from the State Department who is responsible for minimizing the USS Cole's security in the Gulf of Yeman. She didn't want the locals to feel we didn't trust them.
Recipe for failure if Bush doesn't correct it.

These people have the right to go to heck in a handbasket if they want to do that. As long as they keep their problems within their own borders. Democracy would be nice, but this war is not a failure if these people elect to return to the Dark Ages.

We must do everything in our power to prevent this. If it means 10,000 Americans dead and a 200 year occupation, we must ensure Iraq becomes a secular democracy. Allowing it to lapse into a theocracy (whether Shiite or Sunni) would legitimize the other despotisms in the region, and cause Iraq to serve as an extremely wide and sturdy bridge between the Iranian clerics and the rest of the Muslim world.

If the Bush Admin cannot do any better than this, we just wasted 150 lives and $100 Billion.

You can declare your self the mayor of anything and promise any sort law you want, it doesn't mean anything. Iraq is a relatively secular nation. They are not going to go the route of Iran.
