Halle Berry says she thinks she's 'ugly'
Knight Ridder ^

Posted on 04/19/2003 9:01:58 PM PDT by Pokey78

Halle Berry solidified her place as one of the world's sexiest women with her role as Bond girl Jinx in "Die Another Day."

But the Oscar-winning actress (Monster's Ball) says she still doesn't see herself as a beautiful star.

"To be totally honest, most of the time I think I'm ugly," she told the German magazine Journal fur die Frau. "I see myself without makeup every morning and that's why I don't have illusions anymore. I certainly don't feel like a big star."

Berry added that being black still hinders her progress in Hollywood.

"For many film studios and directors skin color remains a problem. They don't believe that the audience will accept a black actor in the main role. These narrow-minded people underestimate the public and prevent advancement in the industry."

Berry's next film will be "X-2," the sequel to "X-Men" slated for a May 2 release.

She goes into the Jolie category of Billy Bob related untouchables now.

Then again, Angelina Jolie is borderline psychotic to begin with....

Only Halle Berry knows what the inner Halle Berry looks like.

Yeah. Kind of like Oprah without makeup...(just damn!)

I used to love Halle Berry. She was on my top two list of Most Beautiful Women in the World (the other being Kate Winslet.) Those were the only two stars I would ever say, without qualifications, are beautiful.

Then I saw her Oscar acceptance speech. In the first few seconds I was sympathetic; she was obviously overwhelmed. But as she went on and on I started thinking, Okay, this girl is unstable and obsessed with race. And the thing is, I know black folk who don't particularly think of her as black. She seems to live in Jennifer Lopez, Mariah Carey land.

Oh well, whatever. She's still beautiful, but now I look at her and see kind of a basket case.

Proof that she is indeed a woman.

I've never met a woman who didn't think she was ugly upon viewing herself in a photo. Endemic to the female sex.

Seems like Latinos were saying the same thing then Jennifer Lopez came along....

It also buys good health care, restful vacations, safe cars, etc etc.
These whining Hollywood crybabies make me ill.

Three points:

1) I despise listening to pampered actresses tell everyone that they don't think that they are beautiful. Fishing for compliments really is not becoming (bump to Col Flag)

2) While she isn't ugly, I don't think that she's gorgeous either. Not my type.

3) The whole "I'm a victim of Hollywood racism" schtick is getting a bit wearisome. Thats how she Mau-maued her way into an oscar last year, and it seems like she is sticking with the same line of BS.

Halle is lovely, although I'm not surprised that she doesn't believe it. I think the reason she feels that way is probably a lack of self-confidence.
"For many film studios and directors skin color remains a problem. They don't believe that the audience will accept a black actor in the main role. It sounds like the problem is in Hollywood, doesn't it? But...but... that could never be...liberal Hollywood? Is she saying that Hollywood limousine liberals worry most about the almighty dollar?

Amen to "women of color" on Star Trek! Give this "poor black thing" a rest, Ms Berry.

Hmm... that ISN'T the same nose, is it???
Moreover, her upper eyelids and lower lip don't really look like that anymore either.

my sentiments exactly!! A real babe, but since last year's acceptance speech, her "attitude" is a turn off.

Her mom told her she's black...

That delicious cup of coffee has definitely got cream in it. I guess mom ascribes to the old "one drop" rule!

I don't know that I'm all that sure there is an Oprah without makeup. May just be a paint job on a technical effect.

I think Billy Bob LIKES 'em crazy. But I'm with you guys, he's the worst accessory a woman could have. Once I've seen him on a woman it's hard for me to look at them again without wondering if some hideous disease isn't working away at parts of them I can't see.

I've learned if you look for a racist you can find them. I also think it's the time her mom lived in too. I just know it's not how I was raised. I've met all kinds of people. I've met some real true racists, white and black, usually more black. I think I've only come across one true white supremacist. Most white people (esp. white men) I meet (that liberals would say are racist) aren't racist but really frustrated. I know about white suburban flight, racial preferences, etc. and workplace discrimination. Plus, because I do talk about my father and mother, I hear things from white people no black person would ever hear. Sort of venting you know? The really tough crowd are the black people I deal with. Some have been through genuine crap like one customer I know who had to hide from the klan in Tennessee. Most are just fishing for racists in every puddle and have never been discriminated against ever. They have a guilt complex...go figure.

Too bad... when you box yourself in as Halle does, you miss out.

Also, Halle acts as if she's the only Bond girl 'of color' (ooo I hate that phrase!). I loved Grace Jones! She likes to play amazon women, but in real life she's actually classy at home. I guess the whole whining thing really gets to independent FReepers.

My hero is responding to my post?! I am so honored. This is almost as awesome as getting to talk to Rush a while back. I wish there was a Project 21 in my area. The boys are wayward, smart but no fatherly guidance.

Halle is a very beautiful woman. But what she feels is something that most women feel from time to time (myself included). It's hard to explain, but I think Alanis Morissette says it best with her song, 'So Unsexy'. Below is the chorus:

I can feel so unsexy for someone so beautiful
So unloved for someone so fine
I can feel so boring for someone so interesting
So ignorant for someone of sound mind

"Her abusive father, Jerome Berry, abandoned his wife and children, and left the family when Halle was four years old. Halle was raised almost totally by her mother, Judith, a psychiatric nurse. Judith then moved her family to the predominantly white Cleveland suburb of Bedford.

This rough start to her life did not deter her from excelling in whatever she did. Halle attended a nearly all-white public school, and as a result, she was subjected to discrimination at an early age. Throughout high school, Halle participated in a variety of extracurricular activities, holding positions of newspaper editor, class president, member of the honor society, varsity cheerleader, and prom queen.

Halle easily won Miss Ohio, Miss Teen All-American, and in 1986, was first runner-up in the Miss USA pageant. She was the first African American to represent the U.S. in the Miss World competition in London. "

What's wrong with this picture? After a rocky start, I'd say she lived a comfortable suburban life. If discrimination would've made me popular enough to be prom queen, bring it on!!!
