I stand corrected. Both were White House speach writers at the time. After a quick Google I see that Safire has taken credit for it.

Good questions, both, but send them to the author of the book/webpage, not me. The second one being a Democrat not Republican? really? Big mistake for the author, if that's so ... again, the website is the author's home page apparently, as these quotes are from there and from his book.
You don't the "stupidity" in Rizzo's statement?
