MODESTO, Calif. — Modesto police say they feared Scott Peterson was preparing to flee to Mexico when they arrested him on Friday.

Peterson was arrested by plainclothes police in San Diego before noon. The arrest was made hours before DNA results were revealed showing that his wife and unborn son were the bodies that washed up on the shores of the San Francisco Bay this week.

Attorney General Bill Lockyer says Modesto police and state agents used wire taps on phones and radio transponders on vehicles to keep track of Peterson. He says that Peterson indicated moments before his arrest that he discovered he was under police surveillance.

Modesto Police Chief Roy Wasden says authorities obtained an arrest warrant yesterday. Wasden wouldn't discuss possible motives for the alleged murder, but said he believed the slaying took place in Modesto.

Peterson is expected to be arraigned early next week on a capital murder charge.

Yes, and for me this case really hit home. I delivered my little son on Valentine's Day, and I have thought of poor Laci and Connor, who would be my Oliver's age, every step of the way. I wish she were sitting with her chubby baby boy in her arms like I am now.

Friday's announcements drew a crowd of well-wishers to the Petersons' home. Many brought flowers, some stood silent while others said quiet prayers. They remembered Laci Peterson as a bright, friendly person.

''My heart goes out to the family,'' said Shanti Cardey, 29, outside the house with her two young girls. ''I feel a lot of sadness and anger. I feel very sorry for the family, I pray for them everyday.''

Raynette Poe, 36, said she was angry: ''How can he hurt his own child and why? My heart goes out to Laci's family.''


In February, Scott Peterson told MSNBC he missed his wife and the child she was to bear.

''I can't drive. I can't sleep,'' he said then. ''Sometimes I feel I just can't do it. I feel like I'm in a dark corner and I just can't function.''

Your are exactly right. For too often I've taken for granted that just about everyone else is a news junkie like me. And when I realize they're not, I'm left dumbfounded. But then there's probably something good about not being such a news/political junkie....I'd probably get a lot more done, be a bit more carefree about life, and reduce my stress level. But I think I'm hopelessly addicted. These are such incredible times in which we live, and I am just so compelled to stay in touch with what's going on, and to read, read, read, and READ SOME MORE, and to listen and watch all that goes on...as much as I can. Whew! Who has time for life?!!! (Just kidding.) Fortunately for me, my DH and I are almost totally similar in this regard, and we don't have young children anymore who would need our attention as much.

I had read on another forumn that snot peterson used his computer to search out the tides ect in the bay where he went fishing for *sturgeon*.

One thing that really got me was the fact that he was arrested at the golf course, at a time when his family has just washed ashore.

So why doesn't the media jump on the fact ever that the jury didn't buy the DNA evidence as proof? Look at everything that has been happening with DNA as the identifying factor.
