Why does that not surprise me? Last time I was there was probably 2000, USS JUNEAU (LPD-10) out of Sasebo. Green Street was off-limits (and was in the early ‘90s too), but not Texas Street.

I feel sorry for the young guys today. They’ll never know what real liberty is like. Between mandatory “liberty buddies”, curfews, a chain of command going straight to the top that is absolutely terrified of the slightest “incident”, liberty today is so pussified it’s pathetic.

My last port visit before I retired was Charleston, SC. The CO actually implemented the same restrictive liberty policy we had when we were on deployment overseas. WTF?! We’re in the States!

Sorry for the rant-this thread is supposed to be the good times we had in the past, not a critique of the present.

The zoomies put their collective heads together and, noticing the small propeller thing on the back, they eventually decided that the object was not a missile exactly but a Mk 46 anti-submarine torpedo.

Man, I remember how the sh*t that hit the fan when an SH-60 out of NAF Atsugi dropped a box of machine gun ammo on a parking lot. IIRC, they recovered all but three rounds and the howling from certain anti-base Japanese was deafening. I guess their heads would have exploded if a torp had been dropped instead.

My last run ashore was Hailfax in 98... great libo, but nothing compared to Olongapo or Pattaya in the 80s...

Liberty is now a pussed-down experience and so are some of most cherished traditions.

I was looking at some old photos the other night, and ran across some pictures of when I Crossed the Line as a wog. What terrific memories! The last time I crossed the line, the highlight for the wogs was the DC Olympics or some such. And of course, today's sailors will never witness a Wog Beauty Contest, which, 20+ years after it happened, I still believe to be the funniest thing I've ever seen in my life.

True:

Bootcamper reports onboard SSN 663. We get him with every underway joke imagineable - mail bouy call to the flying bridge in foul weather gear, 20’ of chow line, relative bearing grease, etc. etc.

He gets to sonar quals and I ask him to explain the difference between relative and true bearings. He starts laughing that I can’t trick HIM then gets up and runs out of the sonar shack!!!!

Im still trying to track down the idiot who approved him for Fast Attacks!

Having spent most of the time between 57-60 and all the time 60-62 homeported in Yokosuka Japan had done my share of Japanese bath houses....IT IS VERY IMPORTANT FOR EVERYONE TO REALIZE THAT A BATH HOUSE IN 1950/60’s JAPAN HAS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH BATHOUSE IN SF.

"That sailor who had the keys for the locker with all the helmets and vests didnt show up for Flight Quarters!"

"Now, I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt...that duplicate key DID exist!"

I’m stationed in Chinhae not too far from Pusan. Its not too bad. It does suck having a curfew though. The buddy system is pretty relaxed down here though. There is always a few idiots ruining it for everyone else. We had a sub visiting and a guy decided to get drunk, steal a Korean cab and then run it into something. I’ve heard some of the ships are requiring calls and request chits to even leave base, its getting pretty crazy in some places when it comes to liberty.

Oh that's funny. Reminds me of Radar on MASH being a Corporal-Captain

It’s a fowl day when a torpedo runs afoul of a chicken coop.

It’s a GREAT thread — and I know someone who’s been advocating keelhauling for a while now... LOL!
