Jewish marine killed in Iraqi combat

By ABIGAIL RADOSZKOWICZ

Marine sniper scout Mark Evnin, 21, became the first known Jewish fatality of the Iraq war when he was shot in the stomach during a firefight in the town of Kut by Iraqi machine-gun fire on April 3.

San Francisco Chronicle reporter John Koopman, who rode with Evnin, reported that Evnin's role was to spot Iraqi snipers and to drive a sharpshooter, a sergeant major, and the journalist as they headed toward Baghdad.

Evnin was hit while shooting back after the convoy come under fire. His wounds at first did not appear life-threatening, and Koopman recalled joking with him about sponge baths from the nurses. But Evnin died while being evacuated by helicopter.

The extended family began to sit shiva in his hometown of Burlington, Vermont, even before the body was returned from Iraq.

Evnin "had always been interested in the military, even when he was a young child," his maternal grandfather, Rabbi Maz Wall, 87, recalled in a Jewish Telegraph Agency report.

Mark "always would say that his zayde was the chief rabbi of Vermont," his mother Mindy Evnin said. Evnin had his bar mitzva at the Conservative synagogue his grandfather led.

Rabbi Joshua Chasan, who currently leads Ohavi Zedek, recalled that Evnin attended Hebrew school in US Army fatigues.

"There's no doubt about it, Mark did it his own way. Vermont is a pretty liberal community, and this kid went into the Marine Corps."

Evnin's parents separated when he was six years old, and his father, Michael, lives in Rockville, Maryland.

"He was my only child. I'll never be a grandmother," his mother told a Newsday reporter from her home in South Burlington.

The Mansions of the Lord

From We Were Soldiers

To fallen soldiers let us sing

Where no rockets fly nor bullets wing

Our broken brothers let us bring

To the Mansions of the Lord

No more bleeding, no more fight

No prayers pleading through the night

Just divine embrace, eternal light

In the Mansions of the Lord

Where no mothers cry and no children weep

We will stand and guard though the angels sleep

Through the ages safely keep

The Mansions of the Lord

In English:

Glorified and sanctified be God's great name throughout the world which He has created according to His will. May He establish His kingdom in your lifetime and during your days, and within the life of the entire House of Israel, speedily and soon; and say, Amen.

May His great name be blessed forever and to all eternity.

Blessed and praised, glorified and exalted, extolled and honored, adored and lauded be the name of the Holy One, blessed be He, beyond all the blessings and hymns, praises and consolations that are ever spoken in the world; and say, Amen.

May there be abundant peace from heaven, and life, for us and for all Israel; and say, Amen.

He who creates peace in His celestial heights, may He create peace for us and for all Israel; and say, Amen.

As a matter of interest, to those who do not know, the Kaddish is Aramaic and not Hebrew.
