The Teflon Pop Star

Singer R. Kelly has been charged with child pornography and suspected of worse—and his new CD is double platinum. Discuss

NEWSWEEK

April 14 issue — People who know R. Kelly tend to use the same word to describe him: unflappable. Last June, the Chicago-based R&B singer was arrested and indicted on 21 counts of possession of child pornography, after a copy of tapes allegedly showing him having sex with a young girl was sent to the Chicago Sun-Times. He promptly locked himself in his private studio, completed two new albums and produced several hit songs for other stars.

THIS JANUARY, JUST after he was arrested again in Florida and charged with 12 more child-porn counts—same girl from the same incident, different poses—he played the Continental Airlines Arena in New Jersey. He made a typically grand entrance: in a skybox above 20,000 heads, his arms stretched out as if nailed to a cross. The standing ovation lasted nearly five minutes.

I can't understand why he would be treated any different
from any other guy. Nosiree, I can't figure it out for the life of me.

Bingo. I don't even play "I'm your angel" at weddings anymore. Just hearing this dudes voice gives me a bad feeling.

He should be locked up. Period.

This guy is a real sicko and should be in jail.

I have a feeling he is going to get the O.J. treatment by the jury and aquitted (in the face of overwhelming evidence to his guilt).

What is disturbing is the fact that (according to this article) his career has not suffered whatsoever.

Luther Jefferson, an 11th grader at L.A.’s Morningside High School, says he has no problem. “If that cat that raped that 13-year-old girl and ran to another country like a b—h can win an Oscar,” he says, “why can’t R. Kelly sell albums?”

Sadly enough, this kid has a point.

Yes, but it is slightly different. Roman Polanski was honored by the so-called "elite" Hollywood crowd --many of whom probably see nothing wrong with having sex with children. Polanski's films rarely achieve better than mediocre financial success with filmgoers. Kelly, on the flip side, has enjoyed huge success financially.

I'm not much of an R & B fan, but R. Kelly is the 2nd coming of Barry White.

His latest song, "Ignition" is a head-bopping jam.

Especially liked his earlier work, like "Body's Calling", "Bump and Grind", and "I Believe I Can Fly."

Too bad he had to pull a Michael Jackson and throw his career away chasing after young girls. A lot of people don't know that R. Kelly used to panhandle and sing on Chicago streetcorners.
