"Wish You Were Here"

For all the free people that still protest.
You're welcome. We protect you and you are protected by the best.
Your voice is strong and loud,
but who will fight for you? No one standing in your crowd.
We are your fathers, brothers, and sons,
wearing the boots and carrying guns.
We are the ones that leave all we own,
to make sure your future is carved in stone.
We are the ones who fight and die,
We might not be able to save the world, Well, at least we try.
We walked the paths to where we are at
and we want no choice other than that.
so when you rally your group to complain,
take a look in the back of your brain.
In order for that flag you love to fly
wars must be fought and young men must die.
We came here to fight for the ones we hold dear.
If that's not respected, we would rather stay here.
So please stop yelling, put down your signs,
and pray for those behind enemy lines.
When the conflict is over and all is well,
be thankful that we chose to go through hell.

Corporal Joshua Miles and all the boys from 3rd Battalion 2nd Marines,
Kuwait 3/9/2003

Good Morning.

This is the Daily Thread of Operation Iraqi Freedom - Situation Room - LIVE THREAD.

It is designed for general conversation about the events of the day. In depth discussion of events should be left to individual threads - but links to the threads or other articles is highly encouraged. This allows us to stay abreast of the situation in general, while also providing a means of obtaining specific information.

Please have mercy on us dial up limited FReepers! Limit the big graphics, post links instead. A brief description of what the graphic is would help!  If you post graphics, please "size" them so that our browsers continue to load the rest of the thread!

To all who helped this get started and keep it running, thank you!

Special thanks to Null and Void for keeping these threads running on the weekends, Mo1 for the screamer, the AdminMods for their tolerance, mhking for the video links, Ragtime Cowgirl for her Exclusive Live Transcription Service™, Fledermaus for his 15 minutes of fame, and, of course, Belly Girl...

Hehehe, too cool. Glad they have a sense of humor about all this. In all seriousness, I did read that the civilians were welcoming our troops into their homes because, (paraphrased quote here), "they won't steal anything or terrorize us like the Fedayeen". I thought that was awfully telling about the mood of those we are liberating. No matter what Baghdad Bob says, they KNOW we are there to help them.

I think it's too soon to tell. Unless they found his body intact and were able to identify him through dental records or fingerprints. I want to see evidence before I believe he's used up all nine of his lives.

Funniest thing about that pic, when I first saw it I thought it DID look like Arabic writing. Shepism "they write in squiggles", after all. ;)

That would be a resounding NO! ;-) I work at small startups. Currently bouncing around contract jobs. I speak from experience with RealPlayer, trust me. :-) (kept having to take it off of people's computers -- it constantly pings the internet to look for updates, or those "realone email" popups, plus it hogs your CPU -- if you don't believe me, bring up your task manager and watch it for a while).

I feel the need to bump this...REALPLAYER SUCKS UP TONS OF CPU, it bogs down internet connections, it spams you, it has a habit of installing itself as a startup application every time you use it

What you said... I'll second that. I banned it long ago from the house (10 boxes), but reluctantly put it on one machine for the war. I know I'll spend half a day purging it, when I no longer need the BagCams. Real really sucks...

No, but especially if you are using RealPlayer, it's a complete resource hog, and almost always will make your machine run poorly, and cause freaky crashes and what not.

Thanks Smokey -- so is there any way to clean things up and get my system running well again? It has gotten progressively worse each day that I've been on here. In fact, I don't even have a BagCam open right now because everything crashes when I do. And that's tough for a BagCamAddict!!

There's also that tantalizing footage Fox has been running of the guy who looks exactly like Saddam's bodyguard in the PR crud the Iraqis released the other day, and then the shot of a guy who looks exactly like him...standing outside the rubble of that meeting place...sans Saddam. (Shep was harping on this on FNC earlier)

Fox - Reuters report that Iraqis asked on Wed. "Who is running the country" after Marines swept to the center of Baghdad. A woman in a hospital asked a reporter "You're a journalist, tell me who's running the country?"

Last night on one of the newscasts they mentioned that the crowds were yelling at the looters, "Ali Baba! Ali Baba! Stop Ali Baba!" My kids thought that was hilarious.

"But even still, you'd think they'd go for gold toilet seats or silverware or SOMETHING besides a door"

Use your imagination... the door is an ideal item on which to stack all the stuff you are going to cart away. A good size door can turn even a lawn mower chassis into an expansive trailer, and even without wheels to put it on, a door can be used as a "loot stretcher" when carried between two men.

Plus, doors are not so easy to make and an attractive one adds to the feng shui of the home. A good sturdy one is not only a nice addition to the decor- it's a good barrier to have in a lawless area full of looters who might want to get into your house, too.

Speaking of doors....

Back in East St. Louis there were always problems with looters stealing not little wood doors, but entire flood gates. They would strip those heavy steel flood gates right off the levees and no one seemed to notice- until there was a big flood. Then everyone got flooded out and the press spewed out nonsense about the flood gates not working, when in truth the flood gates in question simply weren't there!

Most folks believe the thief was a previous mayor, since he wasn't known for his honesty and he had the heavy equipment needed - as well as a bevy of willing city workers and loyal democrats- to haul those things down to the recycling plant.

And every housing project known has had problems with people taking the cables and bars from elevators out of spanking new buildings and slipping them to the recyclers for cash.

That said, it would be fun to watch some Iraqis pay a visit to the UN HQ in NY.

; )

What I noticed (and I think it is the same guy) was that in the Saddam shots his sidburns were shaved.

That tells me the Saddam in the street stuff was much earlier than the last 3 weeks.
