I have advanced degrees in Electrical Engineering and 25 years experience .... and I was out all last year ... nearly lost everything I worked my whole life for.

I guess I never realized how much the foreign influx is eating all those eng. jobs I keep seeing...

One bright ray in my current job search arena is that many folks are looking to hire U. S. citizens now, for security reasons... That could be our "in"...

You're right about one thing, clamper, I am on the naive side in this regard. Keeps me from having scruples about calling random people on the phone and point-blank asking for jobs, though... ;)

I've already stashed some savings and warned my wife that if my company tries to bring in H1-Bs I will attempt to organize a group to stop it. Granted, I don't think I'd have much success as most white collar types are scared of their own shadows and not likely to "make waves".

Back in the early 80's my husband lost his job as a morning anchor on TV and couldn't find a job. We had three small children that needed to eat. I had three part time jobs and he took a job stocking at night at a local supermarket to feed our children. You take what you can and hold your head up high until something comes along. We had to start from scratch but we made it.

Your a wimp, sorry, we no longer need your services. You made a bad career choice, get over it and go to work. Two years at a trade school and you'll be able to find a job. Lee308

You're clueless.

I have a friend who was recently laid off from his engineering R&D job. He has a PhD, and about 10 years experience. Smart guy, good work ethic, personable, etc.... and he hasn't been able to find something permanent in the few months he's been out.

Guess what happened to his job? His company decided to move their R&D branch over to Red freakin' China.

Something is terribly wrong here, and too many people are overlooking it simply because our "leaders" have an "R" by their names.

Like I said earlier, welcome to the New World Order.

The thing that stinks is now healthy companies are facing increasing costs for "unemployment insurance." Increasing the taxes for companies that are able to stay in business is not the solution to the tax revenue shortfall. During the clinton loan years, government budgets were made using continued bubble economy forecasts. Spending needs to be cut.

He should try to get that job now ... I would NOT want to make bets on his likely success .... if he's over 40 ... forget it.

$37K/yr? Wait till the illegals drown your community. She'll be lucky to make $3.7K/yr. They'll work for 10bux/day. Cash.

Aviation Week last week had the same data. Aerospace professionals with security clearances are needed in all companies. LMT intends to hire 10,000 per year for the next five years. Others say the same, except for Boeing. the aircraft maker is in trouble for several more years.

In the 80s, President Reagan set a path to recovery through massive tax cuts and a serious effort to rollback federal regulations on business. He termed it "reawakening this industrial giant".

Where is our Reagan today? Hell, our "leaders" don't even realize that there is a problem. The only "solutions" being offered are more globalization (i.e., more American jobs going oversears), higher taxes, more bueracracy, and more waste in gov't spending.

Well, well, well. Here we go again Willie. Another pity-party thread. Sheesh. Adapt folks. You know what a rut is? A grave with both ends kicked out. If you can't find a job, make one. Matthew Lesko said the government is giving away billions on top of billions to help you. So, you can either adapt, go on the dole or lean on your neighbors (via Uncle Sam) to get a new start.

No argument there, but the underlying problems began earlier (1989).

If you live in an area with higher costs of living, you have 2 choices. 1)Achieve at a higher rate, someway, somehow or 2)MOVE!

Chain Store Sales Down in Early April
Tue Apr 8, 8:17 AM ET

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Retail sales at U.S. chain stores declined last week, due primarily to Americans staying home to monitor developments in the Iraq war and to poor weather, a report showed on Tuesday.

Sales fell 0.5 percent in the April 5 week, after falling 1.4 percent in the preceding week, the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi and UBS Warburg said in a joint report.

Compared with the prior year, sales for the week edged lower by 0.3 percent -- hurt by an Easter-related boost in sales during the comparable week last year.

"The confluence of the lingering 'CNN war effect,' and less than favorable spring weather so far in many parts of the country ... chipped away at consumer demand over the latest week," the report said.

The BTM/UBSW Weekly Chain Store Sales Snapshot is compiled from a group of major discount, department and chain stores across the country that report their weekly results. The BTM/UBSW index measures sales growth with the year 1977 equaling 100.
