This Freep is dedicated to the memory of Staff Sgt. Donald May, Jr., USMC, Chesterfield, VA.
Being a little early, I was able to park the Freep-Mobile directly in front of the Va. Museum of Fine Arts where the Women in Black (I'm just going to call them WIB's from now on) gather before their march down the Boulevard. I hung an American Flag on the side of the truck and EVIL TRIUMPHS WHEN GOOD MEN DO NOTHING with the Eagle, Globe & Anchor emblem on it.
A few of the WIBs were sporting yellow ribbons this week. One of them told me that several of them had relatives in the military, they support the troops, they need to be sent home and she just wanted to say Hi to me. I said, I am very proud of all of our young men and women in the military. Hi.
I followed behind the marchers. At the corner of Boulevard and Broad, the wind blew my two signs off the pole. A group of female student joggers recovered them and held them up to the traffic for me while I tried to find the thumbtacks. (Note to self: get some duct tape ASAP. ) They were proud of their country and I told them I was proud of them, to never be afraid to stand for what is right and true.
Coming back up the Boulevard, I was joined by two remarkable young people, Michael and Dawn. They are Army M.P.s, stationed near Richmond, due to ship out for the Middle East in a couple of weeks. There was a notable increase in the number of honks, waves and thumbs up after they joined me. Even in civilian clothes, they had a quiet dignity, confidence and bearing that was impressive. People responded warmly to them and I felt blessed to have such grand company.
A young Marine, Brian, studying law introduced himself, shook hands and spent a few minutes with us. I was impressed with his demeanor, also. These guys are awesome!
The responses were positive with a couple of exceptions. The loud SUV guy drove buy a couple of times; the first time screeching about President Bush burning in hell, the second time yelling and making nasty gestures.
Thank you Michael and Dawn. I hope you read this and know how much you mean to us in America. May the good Lord watch over you and keep you in the days ahead.
Hello, Flora. It'd nice to meet you in DC this Sat.
