Here's a two-word phrase you don't see or hear much anymore: young adults. It sank beneath the waves of a more recent, more powerful force: the "youth culture."
The youth culture in America is a lifestyle, emphasizing the one thing that youth tend to be very good at: thinking about themselves. Pridefully inner-directed, it opens itself to the outer world primarily in two ways: style and "attitude." Membership in the youth culture is defined by mass marketers as a "demographic," which begins about the age of 12 and runs without interruption to the age of 35. A "young adult" is an anachronism.

The Woodstock attitude breeds cynicism in the young which simply kills off the sense of wonder in discovering the world and one's own just-being-tapped talents and interests. A pseudo-sophistication that blocks one from developing one's conscience, commitment to the good of others, etc.

WTF, you cut out the name "Jessica Lynch" from the 3rd to last paragraph: "This is a culture, for instance, that just now is determined to turn Jessica Lynch into a celebrity. Last week she was a 19-year-old from West Virginia who'd volunteered for the Army and was doing her job on a maintenance crew. But you know for a fact that Larry King, Katie Couric and many others are moving heaven and earth to get her on TV to talk about, what else, herself.
