BASRA, Iraq (CNN) --A giant food distribution complex seized Wednesday by U.S. and British forces in this city grappling with hunger contained massive amounts of food.

A walk through only about 20 percent of the warehouses in the complex revealed that tens of thousands of tons of supplies -- including huge quantities of baby milk -- were being stored in Iraq's second-largest city, which has been wracked by a food shortage.

This should end the argument that the sanctions themselves have caused the suffering of the Iraqi people for anyone who gives his/her eyes permission to be open.

It's no wonder the left loves Saddam so much: he makes the people dependent on the government for food.

Odd that Sean Penn didn't find this, on his fact-finding mission. </sarcasm>

You think Hans Blix knew about this UN distribution center? More proof of the UN's irrelevance.

Amen. Especially given that their argument never held water. But then, what are facts and logic to 'Rats?

I, too, am surpised/pleased that CNN is reporting this.

IMHO, articles like these get published/posted because they are from one of the embeddeds (see disclaimer at end of article). Even CNN would have a hard time justifying the suppression of a report like this from one of the embeddeds.

You have to wonder how long this article will remain available on CNN's site, which is of course why having it for posterity on FR is so cool.

Those charges weren't based on facts anyway. For you and I this is proof. For those making those charges, no proof will be good enough.

"This should end the argument that the sanctions themselves have caused the suffering of the Iraqi people for anyone who gives his/her eyes permission to be open."

But it raises the question of why if this program was monitored by the UN the food was not ditributed.

Hey Kofi what have you been doing?

To reveal the true scope of Saddam's atrocity with this food--

Let's be conservative and assume that "tens of thousands of tons of food and supplies" only means 10,000 tons of food and other nourishment. That's 20 million pounds. Assuming two pounds per person per day, 10 million daily rations of food, enough to feed 27,400 people for a WHOLE YEAR--and that's assuming it's only 10,000 tons. It's probably a lot more.
