Bill ORiley and Brett Beher (sp) of FNC both all but 100% confirmed that at least some of the 11 bodies that were brought back from Iraqi hospital were U.S. POWs. It appears that at least some were executed. Beher at DOD did not want to go too deep into story, as notifications were not yet complete.
SEAL and Ranger teams found two of the eleven bodies in the morgue of the hospital where PFC Lynch was found. An employee of the hospital led them to a shallow grave were another 9 bodies were found. All were returned by helicopter to U.S. control. It is assumed these bodies are from the 507th Maintenance Company at Ft. Bliss, but there is no confirmation. Due to the conditions of the bodies, advanced forensics work is required to determine the identity and exact cause of death
There is also no confirmation of whether or not these bodies might be some of the U.S. POWs that Iraqi television featured in an interview.
Although DOD will not officially confirm anything, there is talk about making some announcement once notifications are complete. If not U.S. soldiers or Marines, why would notifications be necessary?
If it is proven that these were U.S. soldiers and were executed, there will be lots of issues to be resolved.

We have to make sure we have enough bacon to go around! General Pershing had the right idea.

Is the Pershing story true? ... or an Urban Legend?

I marvel at folks who can talk of bringing these people to a war crimes tribunal.
There is no Geneva Convention agreement, anylonger.
These people did not sign it and they are not going to honor it, ever.
Kill the savages and be done with them forever.

A multitude of terrorists entered Iraq before this war and I just bet they had a BIG part to play in the viciousness of what has occurred.

re; Geneva Convention.
These irregular forces are not "in an easilly recognisable uniform of a national power bearing a recognisable emblem (flag, crest, etc.) of that power.
Ergo, kiss of the GC. Sorry about that, Saddamistas

I have found it very interesting that we keep mentioning the Geneva convention. You are right, the Iraqi's were not a signatory to it.
I remember when the Iraqi minister made fun of it on TV. They don't give a hoot in hell for anything but power....hmm, sounds like a political party I know.

The famous story of "Save one for Mainz" ... During WWII, an Allied B-17 crew bailed out over Meinz but were killed by the local German citizens. It would appear that this crime did not go unpunished either - judging from this response to another's question about 'the Mainz' stoning:

That s right Moofy, the B-24/491th BG came down near Braunschweig/Greaven. They bomded the airfield from Hannover.
The crew was killed from civillians on way to the railway station in Russelheim. Before that Russelsheim was bombed and the people was very angry.
After war a court hang 7 guys from Russelsheim, two woman get 30 years prison, one german soldier was executed.

No, of course not, but never bring a knife to a gunfight.
Never fight fair. In battle, fair is dead. Don;t violate rules of way, but if you have to fight, fight to win.
Don't try to win 28-24 in overtime. Whup their arses 100-0 so they take their ball and go home, and never come back.
But remember, never start a fatal fight... but once the other guy starts it, kill him.

I was trained to put a bullet in every head as I assaulted an objective. If my buddy double tapped an enenmy, and I wasn't sure if the bad guy was dead, I would also double tap the same bad guy. This would continue untill those behind would have no doubt that the bad guy was dead!!
Once an objective was secured it was illegal to go back and kill the wounded, they were then considered POW's. Not wanting to be burdened with POW's, we were instructed to make sure of our double tap.

No: Find them, cut off their legs at the ankle, their hands at the wrist. Cut out their tounges, cut off their noses, gouge out their eyes..... but leave their ears undamaged, so they can hear the screams of terror from the children as they come into view. As you wish.

>>Careful. I got many many people mad at me when I suggested that all the wounds on the soldiers shown in the Al-Jaazera video could have been combat injuries. No one was willing to admit that head shots can and do happen in combat.
Kevlar helmets and flak jackets. There were gunshot wounds in areas (forehead and torso) that would have been protected by those things in combat.
I suspect the helmets and jackets were removed prior to wounding.
Execution after capture.
Yes, its circumstantial.

Wolfsangel
A German City on Trial A captured American bomber crew in World War II is marched through a devastated German city and is beaten, clubbed, stoned, and shot to death by enraged civilians
Tried by the Allies under newly devised legal procedures, five Germans meet swift justice at the end of the hangmans noose
A dramatic war story, Wolfsangel is a unique look at the effects of strategic terror bombing on an urban population and an examination of the rules of law used to try German civilians accused of war crimes
The wolfsangel is a Z-shaped metal wolf trap and the symbol of the German city of Russelsheim. On August 24, 1944, the crew members of the downed American B-24 bomber found themselves trapped in Russelheim and faced with the pent-up hatred of German civilians who had lost relatives, friends, and homes in massive Royal Air Force bombings.
Wolfsangel documents the airmens fateful mission, their capture, and their murder by the enraged mob, as well as the extraordinary trial that sent five civilians to the gallows. Told within the larger context of total war and thereby in terms of the design and execution of terror bombing, this compelling and dramatic book also examines the American suspension of some Anglo-Saxon rules of law and court-martial procedures in trying German civilians, suspensions that would later be applied and extended at the Nuremburg war crime trials.
Dr. August Nigro is a professor of English literature at Kutztown University, Kutztown, Pennsylvania.
