BOND LEADER: “BURK, JACKSON USING BLACKS”

Los Angeles - Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson, Founder and President of BOND, the Brotherhood Organization of A New Destiny, today announced details about his organization’s plans to rally in support of the all-male Augusta National Golf Club during the Masters’ Tournament. The rally will take place on Saturday, April 12, 2003, from 9 a.m. till 4 p.m. on a 5-acre parcel of land located on Washington Road (lying just East of Woodsedge Drive), less than a half mile from the front gates of Augusta National. Martha Burk, chair of the National Council of Women’s Organizations and the Rev. Jesse Jackson, head of Rainbow/PUSH, are planning to protest the private club in an effort to force it to open its membership to women.

“We have been issued a permit to protest by the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, and we are going to Augusta to show our support for the club. We’re going there to stand up for the rights of all private American institutions to set their own membership policies without interference from professional agitators like Martha Burk and Jesse Jackson,” said Rev. Peterson.

“Furthermore, we want to send a message to these groups that we will not stand by and allow them to use the black community to advance their liberal agenda,” said Rev. Peterson. It has recently been reported that Burk compared women returning from war and facing ‘discrimination’ at Augusta National to the segregation blacks faced in the United States after returning from World War II. Jackson has called the club’s policy “gender-apartheid.”

“It is absurd for Burk to equate the discrimination faced by blacks during segregation to the plight of white millionaire women who can’t join a private golf club—this women has lost it! I’m asking people from across the country to join us in Augusta to support the club,” added Rev. Peterson. He also asked Americans to pray for the men and women in the armed forces and for President George W. Bush.”

I heard Rev. Peterson talk once. I was impressed.

Is Rev. Jesse J. still going to attend? Or does he now find spending time with his love child and/or the situation in Iraq more important?

I can't believe a black man wouldn't see discrmination when it is so evident. I have black ancestry. I remember when I was growing up the water fountains, there was one with a sign that said COLORED and another one that said WHITE. The restrooms in the local stores didn't have a sign that said MEN and WOMEN. The signs said COLORED and WHITE. When they were going to force the city to integrate the pool, they closed the swimming pool. Rosa Parks is my hero. I am dissappointed in Rev. Petersen on this one. I usually agree with him all the time. I still bear the scars of those water fountains, I knew I had a black slave ancestor named Rufus Hargrove. It just killed me. Not letting women join a damn golf club brings back the same pain.

It wasn't too long ago that blacks were not allowed to play tennis or golf at all. They have come a long way baby. They used to have a separate baseball league. How soon we all forget. It is only OK to discriminate against women now.

BUMP for Jesse Petersen. It's not clear to me why a woman wants to join a man's golf association anyway when there are women's golf associations. I say let the guys have their own club if they want to.

I think this is a bit different. This is a private golf club. However, they do have a lot of female guests. Martha Burke said herself that a lot of business contacts are made on the golf course. I wonder if her motivation isn't about women but for money. If it was a public institution that would be different.

With regards to other things you've said. I'm glad I wasn't born in the South during that time. Actually I wouldn't have been born... no mixed race marriages allowed. I'm glad I wasn't born during that time ANYWHERE in the country.

I think it's just woman's jealousy of men.

To be quite honest, I think she's after the power and corporate sway of a CEO. Most CEOs are men and so you are right in many ways. Why is this such an issue now? She and others have tried to rope Tiger Woods into this and he hasn't fallen for it. After his statements about state's rights, his ethnicity, playing golf, and letting Hootie decide, that pretty much left them without a horse to ride in on.
