The Washington Post ^ | April 3, 2003 | Susan Schmidt and Vernon Loeb

Posted on 04/02/2003 7:40:30 PM PST by John H K

Pfc. Jessica Lynch, rescued Tuesday from an Iraqi hospital, fought fiercely and shot several enemy soldiers after Iraqi forces ambushed the Army's 507th Ordnance Maintenance Company, firing her weapon until she ran out of ammunition, U.S. officials said yesterday.

As I mentioned earlier, it may be that Lynch is getting all the exposure because the others are dead. Remember, along with Lynch they recovered several bodies, which are still being identified, and there were bodies found earlier at another "hospital" where they found a shallow grave and bloodied uniforms.

I agree--and on this point I just hope no one takes her circumstances and tries to make them into a broader rationale for dropping the restriction on women in front-line combat roles.

Sadly, you know it's coming...

"Dave Christian said today that Jessica Lynch's arms and a leg were broken as part of her torture."

When I heard her arms and legs were broken my first thought was that the Iraqi's broke them torturing her.

What a horrible ordeal she must have gone through.

I, personally, do not believe that women have the same killer instinct that men have

Maybe you don't, but you then do not know a combination of PMS and being stalked. Or if your child has been molested, and there are many instances were I could warn you about female 'instinct'.

Bump

Definition of HERO: A person noted for feats of courage or nobility of purpose, especially one who has risked or sacrificed his or her life:

From my perspective and from my experience I say she fits the bill!!

Ditto! Jessica Lynch is a real hero!

I just can't imagine running out of ammo - bummer!

I could very well see a supply clerk in a mechanics outfit running out of ammo in a fire fight. They are armed, but they are not going to have that many clips on them, would take away valuable space for tools, spare parts, etc...

They are pretty much armed for defensive, not attack purposes. Would be interesting to know if she had a sidearm or an m16a2.

Well I'm not sold on women in combat either, but she is certainly a hero.

It seems that anyone who does their job nowadays is a hero. What did anyone expect her to do, fire up her magazine or immediately throw up her hands?

If the RAQI'S DID torture her, I bet she spit in their eye!

I still think women shouldn't be on the front, but if this is true, I'd rather have her beside me in a fight than most of the men I know

Given what I know about women from West Virginia, I suspect it is true (that's a long story, we dont want to get into it here)

Heard on FOX that it was her Iraqi doctor who tipped someone that she was there and the CIA investigated and everything went from there.

I think many should be shame-faced for not bringing Shoshauna up, because she still is in danger.

You think we don't know that?

The LORD [is] my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, [and] my high tower. I will call upon the LORD, [who is worthy] to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies. Psalm 18:2-3

Depending on what job it is. Yes, this woman is a hero. There are plenty of other heroes involved in this operation as well.

I know some women who are as gritty and cold-blooded as any man, very adept at handling firearms, and more than able and willing to empty a magazine at another human being if the circumstances warranted it. But they are very much the exception, and in each case they grew up steeped in a country, horses, and gun culture.

And the women who even desire to join the military are also typically the same exceptions. No one is arguing that all women are good for all roles in the military. But I would argue that some are good enough to make us proud in the roles they can do. That's all.

Good night thread.

I think most of us can't/don't want to even think about what she went through. Thank God she is in safe hands now.
