The Dixie Chicks remain atop the country albums chart, but the recent controversy surrounding the band hasn't helped CD sales or radio airplay. Some radio programmers and fans initiated boycotts after the trio performed a March 10 concert in London. During the show, lead vocalist Natalie Maines noted that they were ashamed that President Bush is from their home state of Texas. Maines later apologized for the remark. However, because of the radio boycott, "Travelin' Soldier" has now disappeared from Billboard's Hot Country Singles & Tracks just two weeks after topping the chart.

Proof positive that the right of free speech also carries responsibilities.

Too bad Maines was too wrapped up in pandering to a foreign audience to remember that.

Please post your comments on her guestbook at nataliemaines.com. I think she needs to hear a bit more from us.

The other 2 chicks are actually talented musicians (one plays banjo, dobro and steel guitar, I think; and the other plays mandolin and fiddle) have fired their lead singer before when they thought it would suit their careers. Do these 2 other chicks not realize that firing Maines right now would likely win the hearts of Americans?

The Dixie Chicks were amongst the first in the fallout
for "giving aid and comfort to the enemy", but now that list has grown and some others need attention.

This is amazing, though. A "hit" song by a top country act has disappeared.

I think this is news. If the song were still #1 the media would hype the anti-war angle. They should tell the MIA story.

Jeanine Garafalo tells me that dissent is being criminalized in the USA. I think this means that you will go to jail if you refuse to buy the Dixie Chicks' CD.

You know, if she had kept her big fat mouth SHUT the Chicks would have had the number 1 selling country song for WEEKS! I like the song "Travelin Soldier". It is not an anti-war diatribe or anything, just a little story about a girl who falls in love with a guy who's on his way to Vietnam. It would have touched the hearts of so many who have loved ones serving in the military. Unfortunately, there are lots of folks who won't even give the song a listen, now, and the Chicks have no one to blame, but themselves.

It's historic for a song to be #1 on the country charts for only one week-- like Travelin' Soldier.
